About the Author
Dr Fereydoon Batmanghelidj gained his formal medical education in England at St Mary s Hospital in London. He went into practice in his native Iran, but when the country became convulsed by the violent revolution that overthrew the Shah he was arrested and sentenced to death. While on death row in Teheran s Evin prison he became aware of the healing powers of ordinary tap water. His discovery, and a quickly-written research paper on the subject, was to save his life. He presented his medical findings to the presiding judge at his appeal, who rescinded his sentence so he could study the issue further. Upon his release after two and a half years in prison, he fled to the United States, and sought political asylum. There he was able to undertake considerable further research. With a supporter he set up the Foundation for the Simple in Medicine at Falls Church, Virginia. He has campaigned ever since for worldwide recognition of his discoveries, often clashing with the medical establishment and the pharmaceutical industry. Known affectionately as Dr B or Dr Batman he is also the author of many related books as well as shorter specialist publications on asthma and arthritis.

A Flood of Unsupported Information1
There is no doubt that I have noticed benefits from simply drinking more plain, still water. My energy levels have improved and I seem to feel less tension stored in my muscles, including around my head. About 2 litres spread over the day is good for me, more if I exercise, I still have a few cups of tea too.

My father had a highish cholesterol and was recommended by his doctor to drink more water. He also saw a nutritionist, who thought his diet was okay, so made no recommendations to change that. Drinking more water was the only change he made and his liver function tests showed an improvement and his total cholesterol levels fell to 190.

However I find Dr Batmanghelidi's book a rather confusing read. He presents scientific facts mixed up with his own observations and his personal beliefs and does not clearly reference any scientific studies, for example he has not shown that he has conducted any double blind trials himself. At the end of his book is a long list of books he has read from where he must have regurgitated much of his information. It is not clear what information comes from which books, or what is his opinion, as he gives no footnotes. The book is full of 'letters' endorsing his recommendations.

He goes on to claim AIDS is not caused by a virus, apparently it is caused by absorbing hormones (he does not say what hormones) from semen through anal intercourse. And he says these hormones have immune suppressing abilities and so AIDS transpires. He also says this only happens in individuals with an imbalance of amino acid stores, but does not explain. He says these hormones are not absorbed through vaginal intercourse (he does not mention what happens with oral sex). In the New Scientist online journal on 26 June 2002 an article appeared stating scientists believe '...hormones in semen are absorbed through the vagina.' (apparently they can make you happy too, maybe I'll make a new chat up line from that!). What about haemophiliacs becoming infected through blood transfusions? Well his explanation is they have developed AIDS because these 'hormones' were present in the transfused blood. He does not explain why AIDS only appeared in the last 30 years, obviously people have been having anal sex for longer than that.

He's very worried about these hormones but advocates the consumption of cow milk, which is a cocktail of growth hormones designed for baby cows to grow. Cow milk contains IGF-1, a hormone we produce too, it tells cells to grow. We also produce a hormone called IGFBP that tells cells to stop growing, if these become out of balance cells could grow too long. This has been implicated in raising androgens and a cause of acne (see Loren Cordain's book The Dietary Cure for Acne), it may then also support the development of cancer, but research here is new, see Cancer Research UK's website.

Another gem from the doctor, page 133, 2006 edition: 'The children in Romania that were the subject of many television programmes most probably did not get AIDS from blood contamination; they more than likely developed AIDS as a result of malnutrition.' That's all he says about that, he makes sensational statements and does not support them.

I will be throwing this book in the bin.

Dr Batmanghelidi died from pneumonia related complications in 2004 at the age of 73.

A must have 5
A must have for any alternative therapist. A must have for the education of those traditional medicine. The sooner we all understand the need for hydration the better. This book helps to convey this. The chapter on aids though I find difficult to understand. But dispite this it still gets five stars

A real eye opener: reminds us of how precious water is4
Dr Batmanghelidj is a man of conviction. He writes from his own considerable experience, shares his letters with us, and had taken the time to create fantastic flow charts and process diagrams to aid understanding.
The book is well written, with accessible, easy to understand explanations about how the body works, and why water is crucial to its good functioning. I learned so much from this book and notice that my skin, my energy levels and my concentration/cognitive abilities are better when I drink plenty of good quality water.
The ideas in this book are well explained, and it is only a question of keeping an open mind and experimenting for yourself if you have doubts. The problem with the central idea that water can be used as a cure/prevention for so many conditions is politics. Only the water companies would benefit from this book. Not to mention that the drugs companies make more money if conditions are treated over long periods or indefinitely like insulin, warfarin, etc. As the drugs companies sponsor most medical research, it will be a very long time before we get proper independent trials to validate the ideas in this book. Doctors, after 6-10 years of studying, do not want to be told that water can fix things that drugs only palliate. I can understand that, you cannot through that kind of training without developing strong beliefs. However, luckily the author used his training and his observations and his desire to ease suffering to produce this book. For me, it was easy. The book 'prescribes' a glass of water to be repeated at various times for certain conditions. It also talks about the ideal intake. I tried it, and except for more frequent trips to the ladies room, the benefits are clear.
For me, as a complementary therapist, this book is fascinating and I shall be recommending it to my clients.
