PSP 3000 - A jazzed-up future proofing
I got a psp slim and light last christmas. I have found this to be an amazing handheld. I don't have the time and space to have an Xbox 360 or PS3, the PSP however can go anywhere and you can put the system onto stand by, ready to play later on. This is a great machine, it even plays movies (UMD discs and Digitally stored movie files)music and works as a photo/picture viewer. I love this machine.
When I found out that the PSP 3000 was coming out I was really excited about the brighter screen, anti-reflection and in-built microphone. Basically I spent an extra £20 getting this and yes, the screen works much better in brighter light, the colours are definitely sharper, the microphone works well (I made a skype call with it and my headphones in my ears)and the case is more resistant to finger prints.
To be honest these are features which should have originally been on the first machine. THESE ARE NOT GROUNDBRAKING! My slim and light was malfunctioning so I exchanged it for the psp 3000. If you already have a slim and light, think very carefully before buying this. You are not getting more bang for your buck! If you are deciding between this and the slim and light go for this, because you will have the machine that the first slim and light should have been.
Brilliant Machine.. must have a different one to all the bad reviews...
Okay, so some of the other reviewers are slagging off the new PSP-3000 series... well assuming they actually have the console, they must have a different one to me seeing as:
1. Screen quality is mind blowing... graphics and vivid and crisp, better than the old ps2 graphics in many cases. Still haven't come across that interlacing 'issue'... beats ghosting any day
2. Sound quality is surprisingly good. Most portable products with their own speakers are usually quite poor. Of course headphones are better but then can be a tad antisocial and impractical at times.
3. As a portable gaming machine it is unmatched. Pure and simple. The ONLY thing the DS has over it is the price... and then to get the multimedia abilities of the PSP, you have to buy an R3 chip for the DS anyway... and then the graphics of the DS are still v basic.
4. In terms of build quality its surprisingly sturdy and ridiculously light. Slim enough to easily fit in a pocket. A case is advisable but smudges on the screen are surprisingly hard to notice.
In conclusion, awesome machine. Fifa 09's pretty good too (painful to say considering i'm a ProEvo fan...)
A little perspective
Let's get things clear here. This probably isn't worth buying if you already own a PSP slim and lite, fair enough. But if you don't yet own a PSP then you should definitely consider buying one. All the 1,2 and 3 star reviews are reflective of an unimpressive upgrade, and by no means represent the attributes of the system itself.
The PSP is a very cool little gaming device capable of PS2 quality visuals; it plays film and music media; it works as a camera (with the correct add-on), sat nav, has wireless internet access and can link to your PS3 while you are out and about via remote play. It is truly versatile.
It's not as user friendly as the DS and a second analogue stick would have been a worthwhile addition. If you are a casual gamer then perhaps Nintendo's machine is more for you as the games are more geared towards accessible input, but if you want to play Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on the train then this is the one.
