Mamma Mia meets the Dalai Lama
Over the Summer, I re-read `Happiness Now' and was so impressed (again) at Robert Holden's knowledge, insight, wisdom and the sheer poetry of his writing.
It got me wondering what else he'd written since 1997 and discovered this brand new book. If I'm honest my fear was whether "Be Happy" was a re-hash of previous (albeit good) work.
This fear was totally unfounded. "Be Happy" is remarkable on so many different levels.
For a book `about' happiness to evoke such joy while you're reading it is, takes some doing! Robert has such an obvious love of language and its beauty. His intelligence, wit, and playful use of language shines through. To me at least, the mark of `literature' is how slowly you choose to read something. This was therefore a slow read for me. I chose to absorb, rather than merely read the words.
His blank page in the book where you are invited to write your own definition of happiness provoked me to write "To feel at ease and at peace with who I am, where I am and what I choose to do for myself and others." Worth the price just for helping me to realise this.
One paragraph he writes "....happiness is not a mental idea; it is the ground of your being. Happiness is not learned; it is remembered. There is no pass or fail. Happiness is not to be understood; it is to be enjoyed. Happiness happens when you least inspect (sic) it..."
Robert Holden PhD deserves enormous thanks for creating such an outstanding contribution to happiness and humanity.
If "Be Happy" was a film, it would probably be "Mamma Mia meets the Dalai Lama." With a definite Oscar for 'Best Screenplay".
And for me, this coming Christmas will be the easiest I've ever had for buying gifts that will be appreciated! Thank you.
Warm, witty, down-to-earth good sense
If you're worried that Robert Holden is one of those self-help writers who are so self-righteously worthy that they make you feel guilty, then don't be. He comes across as a beacon of good sense and a warm, wise and funny human being whose writing is a joy to read - intelligent yet totally accessible, literate but down-to-earth. He won't have you striving for perfection or dazzled by unreachable goals - this book will lead you gently along a path of self-acceptance and a recognition of the joy already existing in your world in a way that will inspire and enhance every aspect of your life. Add to that some great stories, jokes and quotations from my favourite poets and I'm hooked - if I could give it more than five stars, I would.
Thoroughly recommended for anyone who loves good writing, feeling inspired and being happy.
Not so much a ray of sunshine - more a whole Summer's worth!
A wonderful book. Deep and thoroughly useful (not at all superficial or glib). Useful resource and backed up by research studies proving effectiveness. I get the feeling that Robert Holden writes as he speaks - he must be a very likeable man. Highly recommended!
