Customer Reviews
This stunning remastered and expanded budget compilation of the band's early output is a moving surprise!
This 2-CD, 90-minutes set includes most - but not all - of the music recorded and released by the Move from 1966 through 1968. These original recordings are, at long last, available in excellent remastered form. The availability, on the second disc, of previously unreleased stereo versions of many tracks proves that the master tapes have finally been recovered. The resulting sound quality supersedes, by far, all previous CD releases.
The Move was an excellent and influential pop-rock-psychedelic Birmingham band. Roy Wood was their greatest asset, with exceptional gifts as a composer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. He kept the band going despite numerous personnel changes. In its time, the band was also renowned for its stage antics.
Disc one presents the thirteen tracks from their first (mono) album in the same sequence as on the original 1968 Regal Zonophone LP. It includes both sides of their first two singles for the label.
Three other Wood compositions stand out: "Yellow Rainbow", "Walk upon the Water" and "Cherry Blossom Clinic."
The rest is more than adequate, although the three covers are nothing more than filler.
The inclusion of both sides of their two early, great Deram singles amply compensates these shortcomings.
The compiler has chosen to reissue their powerful, Jimi Hendrix-inspired third single for Regal Zonophone ("Tiger Woman") on "Shazam". "Vote for Me", the "new" track on disc one is certainly no match for it!
Disc two offers 16 stereo tracks. The three new tracks are, in my opinion, of modest value although they will certainly please the collector. The stereo versions (including two alternate takes) of tracks appearing on disc one prove, however, most interesting. They enable the listener to hear much more details than the corresponding mono tracks.
Finally, the packaging is great whilst the accompanying booklet features numerous photos and interesting notes.
This Salvo compilation is an absolute must for the numerous fans of the band. It is most welcome after so many time spent without much hope of ever listening to cleanly remastered Move material and with the boon of the stereo tracks (and rarities.)
What a fantastic start to a genuinely exciting reissue series
What can I say? Reissues may come and go featuring The Move, but none have ever been treated as well as the first two albums recently issued. I must own most CDs that have ever come out by the band over the years, and this is the first time that the sound on straight remasters has sounded so good, let alone the tracks which have been remixed to stereo after all these years.
If all goes to plan, the further album reissues, the double BBC set, and four CD anthology style box set (now due in February 2008 I hear from a good friend) shall all be a joy to behold and should fill all the holes in the band's past.
Truly remarkable. Go buy, you know you need to. Even if you have the albums already, the bonus tracks alone are worth it - and there are links to more unreleased tracks on a special area website (FIVE more tracks available there to buyers of both the first two albums, as I write this review).
Classic Psychedelia
Not a lot to add to the other reviews here - this is a superb album; a real labour of love The remastering is excellent and allows us to appreciate what a forgotten group The Move were.
The tracks cover some really different styles and are quite wacky (silly accents and mad instruments) but my wife keeps saying "I didn't know that they did this one: I love this" and my 2 and 6 year old kids love it and sing along to every tune!
Great stuff and a great price for a double CD - if you have an interest in ELO or the Birmingham 60's sound then this is for you and holds up better than many a Stones or Kinks album form the same era. Recommended.
