Editorial Reviews

Review
I particularly enjoyed the theory sections in [Learning and Being] - and I valued the inclusion of cultural, political, professional and social issues at an early stage . . . I also valued the inclusion of the nineteen propositions in the Merry book, and the translations into more approachable language will, I think, be welcomed by trainees . . . I anticipate that trainees will especially welcome the additions to the Merry book about placements (chapter six, 'Training Issues: Client work and personal development') and Supervision (chapter seven). To give a flavour of these, Merry explores issues around many placement agencies offering time limited therapy and the difficulties trainees experience with this, offering helpful texts (including references to Brian Thorne) along the way. Many issues about seeking and experiencing supervision appear in the following chapter. I feel sure that trainees will also find the 'Resources' chapter in Merry helpful too - it leaves them with somewhere to go. --Steve Vincent, Person-Centred Practice

From the Publisher
Tony Merry's second edition of Learning and Being in Person-Centered Counselling stands out as impressively comprehensive, accessible and skilfully condensed. Many cutting edge topics are included such as discussions about human nature, multi-cultural awareness and time-limited practice. The resources chapter itself will be of great interest and help to trainees and practitioners.
Colin Feltham, Reader in Counselling, Sheffield Hallam University.

Customer Reviews

A good starter for anyone training to be a 'helper'5
Well-written and understandable with explanations on theory and practice, Tony Merry's book contains exercises for the student to work through as well as a comprehensive list of further reading material and organizations to contact. A thought-provoking read.

A must for anyone interested in or about to take part in counselling5
I read this book as part of a course at a university in Counselling. I would recommend it to anyone who is on the waiting list for counselling. It has the potential to explain to you who you are and why you are like that. It might also de-mystify what Counselling is about and therefore help you to make the most of counselling sessions.
