Ironman in a Nutshell
A refreshing 'no nonsense' approach to Ironman training.
Don Fink cuts to the core of this huge topic. His vast experience in racing & coaching combined with his uncanny ability to keep things simple produces a mighty fine book.
His tried and tested ideas will get you IronFit without having to give your entire life over to it.
He avoids any over-kill of science & complexity, the result is an easy to understand super effective training & racing game plan.
Even the tricky subjects of swim technique & periodization are put across in an easily digestible form.
He leaves no stone unturned - everything you'll ever need to prepare for the 140.7 mile challenge of the Iron Man.
FANTASTIC!!!
I am a soldier in the forces and have a degree in Sport Science, and concider myself to be of a high level of fitness, but this book REALLLY helped me achieve a new level of fitness. It is very easy to read, and a pleasure to do so. Even the sections that i have extensive knowledge on, and would normally skip in most books, i found myself reading, as it really is such a good read. It is also full of great hints for participating in your first triathlon, let alone an Ironman.
One of, if not the best training book i have read in a long time!!!
MAKES IRONMAN POSSIBLE - PROBABLY.( UPDATED)
I bought the book because I didn't want to be one of those people who enters an Ironman but finds that they haven't done enough training.
The question is How much is enough?
This is where our man Don Fink comes in with not one but three 30 week training programs.
The Competitive, The Intermediate and The Just Finish.
So at a glance one can vitually guess the result by how many hours a week one is able or willing to devote to training.
Don assures us that every effort is made to maximize the time spent training avoiding unnecessary "Junk Miles".
Judging by Don's CV and experience as a trainer he probably knows what he's talking about and you'll definitely need to buy a heart rate monitor if you don't already have one.
Having something straightforward to follow removes that worrisome question of Am I Doing Enough Training?
UPDATE TO REVIEW - POST IRONMAN FRANCE.
Yes managed to finish my first IM. but not exactly in a competitive time though.
A lot of people ended up walking during the run but I was able to keep running.
No ill effects after the event.
Wasn't sure if I would even finish so things went better than I thought.
Maybe I didn't stay up in the heart rate zone enough during training which meant a slower pace, but I hadn't set any goal other than finishing.
Good book.
