Ellison's blistering and impassioned first novel, winner of the prestigious American National Book Award, tells the extraordinary story of a man who is invisible 'simply because people refuse to see me'. Yet his powerfully depicted adventures - from a terrifying Harlem race riot to his expulsion from a Southern college - go far beyond the story of one man. The lives of countless millions are evoked in this superb portrait of a generation of black Americans.

Customer Reviews
Not a wonderful book but an important one
I was surprised to discover that no-one had written a review about such a great book!
This is a novel that discusses the isolation felt by a black man who existence and value is ignored by society. What makes this such an effective book is that it is possible to relate to it regardless of your ethnic origin, as most of us at some point have felt 'Invisible'.
It is also important as it was written at a time when Civil Rights had not yet become a huge issue, therefor it could be argued that books like these contributed greatly in raising the awareness if racial intolerence.
All in all, read this book, it will not be a waste of your time.
