Editorial Reviews

CD Description
Named for the Liverpool street where John Lennon grew up with his Aunt Mimi, this posthumously released collection features songs originally recorded for WALLS AND BRIDGES minus the horns and string arrangements later added. Most of these songs were either produced by Phil Spector or Lennon himselfand the differences are readily apparent. Spector co-wrote "Here We Go Again" and oversaw Lennon's covers of "Angel Baby" and "Since My Baby Left Me", a song that sounded as if a party was going on at the time of its recording. All three were doused in the uber-producer's trademark "Wall Of Sound" style of production.
An obvious nod to his producer's past was Lennon's decision to cover and slightly rework the Teddy Bear's "To Know Her Is To Love Her". The '50s-flavoured "Rock And Roll People" is a Lennon production that shows an obvious debt to Little Richard's skill on the '88s and provesthe ex-Beatle to be no slouch on the piano himself. Other Lennon-produced tracks--including "Steel and Glass", "Scared"and the Harry Nilsson co-written "Old Dirt Road"--all have sparse instrumentation and ache with Lennon's emotive vocal and instrumental nuances.

Lennon Goes Back To His Roots4
Consisting of out-takes from the rock and roll/walls and bridges albums, this is amust for Lennon fans looking to add to their collections

OK Compilation for Lennon Completists3
This album pre-dates the 4-CD John Lennon Anthology and is not as interesting or rewarding. A collection of out-takes and weaker material from the Rock n Roll and Walls and Bridges albums, it is neverthess an interesting listen.

The alternative versions of familiar songs from Walls and Bridges aren't very different from the selected versions, but are worth a listen or two as try-outs and demos. For example, Steel and Glass gets an acoustic based treatment which makes it sound less like its notorious parent, How Do You Sleep?

The Rock n Roll songs were not included on that album; Rock and Roll People is perhaps the best of these, a nice Lennon rocker with piercing slide guitar from (probably) Jesse Ed Davis. To Know Her is to Love Her is a throwback to the Beatles Decca audition tape which doesn't quite come off.

Sound is OK but little different to the LP and there are no CD bonus tracks.
