A superb collection of the best solo work of John Lennon5
I have spent the afternoon listening to the respective "greatest hits" albums for each of the Beatles during their solo careers, and [in my opinion] "The John Lennon Collection" is clearly the best of the quartet. The nineteen songs collected here represent less than a dozen year's work, from "Give Peace a Chance" (with both Lennon and Tommy Smothers on guitar) in 1969 to "(Just Like) Starting Over" in 1980. Listening to these familiar songs again, what strikes me is the way they represent the different facets of Lennon's songwriter persona. Here is Lennon the angry young man ("Instant Karma!" & "Power to the People"), Lennon the romantic ("Woman" & "Love"), Lennon the father ("Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)"), Lennon the dreamer ("#9 Dream"), Lennon the pacifist ("Happy XMas (War Is Over)"), and Lennon the idealist ("Imagine"). Ironically, in trying to find himself in the decade after the Beatles split up, Lennon ended up revealing more of himself than did McCartney, Harrison and Starr in their solo careers. The other nice thing about this collection is that off the top of my head I cannot name another song from Lennon's solo albums that I would have wanted to have seen included.

very good, but not the best4
While the CD contains almost all the vital tracks, it is missing Working Class Hero, one of my person favorites. All the other important ones, Imagine, #9 Dream, Stand by me, Woman, are on there. For the definitive collection get the new "Lennon Legend" (20 songs) but this is very close (17).

A cracking good collection of songs!5
This album is a collection of some of John Lennon's best known songs from his short-lived solo career (less than 10 years is far too short in my opinion!).
It is just as good or perhaps even better than the more recent Lennon Legend CD because it doesn't just give the singles he released it also offers such tracks as I'm Losing You which is a real belter of a song.
Also on a more poignant note, all the photos on the album are taken from Annie Leibovitz's photo shoot on December 8th 1980, the day John Lennon was killed, so they are touching in their own right.
I have noticed that this album plays particulary well in a car as it gets everyone bopping along without causing any accidents! A worthy addition to your music collection.
