Customer Reviews

What a dreadful disappointment!3
As an avid Diana fan, and a very regular viewer of the brilliant 'Live in Paris',I think that 'Live in Rio' is just an awful disappointment. From the stage settings to the lighting, the toppy sibilance on her vocals, lethargic deleivery and the sometimes 'iffy' repertoire, it just does not do justice to Diana and to sensual Rio. Paulinho da Costa sadly sometimes appears as a 'token Brazilian', because by and large what he is seen playing is not audible on the soundtrack!! The audience singalong might work live but on a concert DVD is really just 'kitschy'. Sadly 'The Girl from Ipanema' and 'Walk on By' are two of the most 'untouchable' songs ever performed after Astrid Gilberto and Dionne Warwick claimed ownership of them. Neither work for Diana! Diana is a remarkable talent turning even the country song 'Crazy' with Willie Nelson & Elvis into a dream performance. Too often on earlier albums the choice of repertoire has not been good. What a shame! Diana Krall - Live In Rio [Blu-ray] [2008]

Ok but not brilliant3
Comparing this to it's excellent forebear (the Live in Paris DVD), it seems the mastering and production values are not as good. Even though we get a DTS HD Master Audio track, it fails to convey the immediate presence of either the band or the audience the way LiP did. There are a few video issues relating to stage lighting which occasionally give a video-y and unnatural shimmery patina to the players' faces, which can be a bit distracting. And the band itself does not appear to have as much fun as they did back in 2000. Not a bad concert blu-ray by any means, but nothing like the excellence of Live in Paris. I wonder if that's ever coming out on Bluray; it was shot either on film or HD cameras by the looks of it, so a BD release is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Dont play until late5
Firstly the Video quality...Just one word SUPERB....I have a collection of Blu-Ray discs & the quality of some is not great but this one is up there with the best of them...Same high quality as Andrea Bocelli's Vivere..As far as Audio goes, I have a very basic system but sounds great to me.
Content...This is a very relaxing peice of entertainment & I rate it as brilliant but definately late night stuff....Would have been nice if there had been a few guests strutting their stuff but Diana performs alot of well known songs so you never get bored unlike a disc I bought from a gentleman performing at Madison Square Garden on his 60th birthday..Virtually all the well known material was left out so very disappointing
All in all a brilliant piece of entertainment which will be getting alot of "plays" from me....excellent value for money
