A delightful,enlightening, gloriously warm book
I found this book in a far, dark corner of a tiny shop in Skiathos town, in the Greek Isles, covered with dust. The most precious find of any of my travels,it is a delightful peek into the people, backstreets, harbors and countryside of the very islands I was then enjoying my holiday on. Jon Carroll has brilliantly documented the time he and his wife spent in the Sporades, starting with his finding the islands on a journey on his beloved yacht.... sweet tales of the townfolk, the boatbuilders, the colorful characters who frequented the tavernas, the goatherds... the building of his home on Skopelos... all in all a luscious chronicle of the beautiful islands he obviously loves so well. I have since lost my copy of this book and am furiously trying to find a copy, which I will cherish forever. A WONDERFUL, heartwarming book.
Pre dates the "Year in Provence" type books
I found this book like many others I suspect, on holiday. The rest of that holiday was spent tracking down the locations. This book contains none of those disparaging descriptions of the "natives" and is much better for it than the much hyped best sellers of recent years.
Essential reading for all Skiathos and Skopolos lovers
This was mentioned as a must read book for all lovers of the Sporades islands. It tells how it used to be back in the 60's before the onset of mass tourism.
Do read this book and if you can take the time do try to match up the locations mentioned, they are all still there.
The old harbour in skiathos by the submarine mermorial is where the caiques (The old ferries) docked and where the tourist boats now depart. The old mooring rings are where he (Carrol) moored his boat. Stamatis taverna where he had drinks.
