Customer Reviews

Brief and to the point.4
I was on a 48-hour stopover in Shanghai, and this book covered everything I needed to know for a my short stay. If you are staying more than 3 days, get another guidebook. Critisisms? I found the layout of the maps confusing, and it to me it focuses too much on the ex-patriot community to the detriment of the locals.

Disappointing2
Very disappointing guide from LP. Very colourful but confusing layout. Advoce on practicalities was poor I thought. Go for the normal city guide instead.

OK but not great3
This is a handy little guide book and mine is very well thumbed following my initial trip and subsequent move to Shanghai. I found the maps in the book quite useful, as English language maps of Shanghai can be difficult to find. The pull-out paper map in the back is inconvenient though, and the metro map should really be in the main body of the book instead of on the pull-out (fall-out!) map. However, be aware that many of the listings in this book are out of date. Things change fast here, and quite a few of the bars and restaurants listed here are no more. Also, the previous reviewer is correct to say that the entries are aimed at ex-pats rather than holidaymakers- too many ex-pat hangouts are listed in place of good Chinese neighbourhood bars and restaurants. Some of the listings have a distinctly sneering tone, which implies these sights are not worth visiting. If this is the case, why put them in the book? In fact, many of them are worth visiting and don't deserve their reviews.

I'd recommend this book as it gives you plenty of ideas of places to visit, but take the descriptions with a pinch of salt and don't be surprised to find you're dining and drinking among foreigners.
