Comprehensive Guide4
Over the years I have grown to trust the DK Eyewitness guides and this one is no exception. Covering Bavaria and the State capital Munich it clearly sets out what there is to see in the clear fashion we have come to expect from the eyewitness guides. The Guide is split into sections each covering a Bavarian region or an area of Munich. Illustrated with great photographs this guide gives you enough of a taste without making you feel that now you have the book you have no need to go.
As with all of this series, the back the book is dedicated to practical information covering local travel, eating out places to stay etc. This section is essential reading before arrival however some aspects can date quite quickly. To summarise, this is a great book to slip in a large pocket every time you are in the area unless you live in the area you will never be able to see everything but this guide will help you make the most of a trip to Bavaria.

Great pictures4
As with all Eyewitness Guides, the photography and illustration in this book are a major draw. In colour throughout and full of photos and labelled pictures, it really does 'show what others only tell' as the tagline goes.

This guide is also very informative and I found it contained more useful practical tips than some of the other titles in the series. Also, as this part of the world is so traveller friendly (tourist info both in situ and on the web is excellent, all is well signposted, etc.) it's less vital to have a guidebook with detailed practical information. The maps are clear and easy to understand, though a comprehensive public transport map for Munich would be useful (saying that, the network has such good information at stations and stops that it's not essential).

The size is a little bulky though I did manage to carry it around in my handbook, but there are certainly slimmer books out there. It's quite easy to use and find your place in once you know which of the regions you are in.

The section covering the Hohenschwangau-Neuschwanstein area could have been a bit more in depth given that this is a part of the region that most tourists will visit. I only spent a day there but managed to do several really nice things not even mentioned in the book. There could be more information on the castles themselves as well.

But on the whole a good guidebook, and one that even sufficed for me as an independent lone traveller (which normally I find only Lonely Planet or Rough Guide do).

Munich Travel Book4
Thoroughly glad I bought this book before our trip. We enjoyed more of Munich and its surroundings then we would have possibly been able to without it! Great maps, pics, ideas, and info!!
