Customer Reviews
A mixed bag, excellent guitar but so-so vocals
Overall I was a little disappointed with this offering. John Doyle (formerly of Irish-American group Solas)is a wonderful trad and folk guitarist who almost single-handedly (if Arty McGlynn will forgive me!) has rewritten the rules for the instrument, adding the passion and fire of Spanish flamenco to what was previously little more than a background strum. His style and sound are now instantly recognisable, and are to be found gracing many of America's top acoustic performers cds (Alison Brown, and Cathie Ryan to name just two)There is much to admire about his playing here, and indeed he has added some very nimble reels to his more normal chordal work. The problem is that he is,at best,a tuneful background singer, but his voice lacks power and personality. This is not helped by selecting a number of tunes that better singers than he would find difficult to pull off. There is a duet with Kate Rusby which would sound better if she'd just sang solo.A more conventional version of the "Wild Colonial Boy" would have better suited his vocal ability,"Little Sadie" pales into comparison with the old Doc Watson version, and I find his pronunciation ("dis","de", "mudder" and "fadder") off-putting in places. On the other hand, the set of reels starting with "Tie the Bonnet" is superb. Doyle's picked melodies are accompanied by the 2 "Supermacs" (McCusker and McGoldrick)and the whole piece is powered by Doyle's driving rhythm. This outstanding track gives a tantalising glimpse of how good this cd could have been. I would rather if Doyle had got some of the singers he has backed to return the favour, allowing him to do what he does best, i.e. stick to the guitar !
its amazing
This is the album for people new to the sound. If you know nothing about folk listen to this and you will never turn back, this is just so good truly a cut above.
