Product Description

Issued in 2007, Elizabeth Cook's cheekily titled third album, BALLS, finds the Florida-born country singer offering up a dynamic set of tunes. From the brassy "Sometimes It Takes Balls to Be a Woman" to the delicate, folk-tinged "Rest YourWeary Mind" (with Bobby Bare Jr.), Cook evokes the sound ofvintage Dolly Parton, and reinforces her reputation as a criminally underrated performer.

Customer Reviews

Genuine country, genuine artist...and genuine quality. 5
Elizabeth Cook has a twang in her voice which will probably stop her crossing over into country pop, and that is our gain. She sings delightfully, writes much of her own material, and is a lovely performer live.
On this disc she is a revelation, the 12 songs fit together and complement each other, whilst the session musicians play beautifully and Rodney Crowell produces flawlessly. Even Nanci Griffith turns up to sing harmony on Down Girl.
Balls is the title track, and it is good, but if any song breaks through it will be Always Tomorrow which Elizabeth sings with real feeling.
This is a classy album, and deserves to sell in shedloads, whether it will depends on people taking a chance on a largely unknown artist. Years ago, I took a chance on buying my first Emmylou Harris and later, a Nanci Griffith album caught my attention.
Believe me, she is that good.

Pure Country At It's Very Best!!!5
Where do you begin to review something that is so perfect and flawless!Because that's exactly what this album is.
Elizabeth is often compared to Loretta Lynn and this album will show you why.
With the title track Sometimes It Takes Balls To Be A Woman, this has Loretta written all over it.With it's feisty,tongue-in-cheek lyrics and traditional sound you will easily fall in love with this one.Other great uptempos are Times Are Tough In Rock 'N Roll(this has a great bluegrass style to it),He Got No Heart and What Do I Do.All cracking songs.
But the real gems are her ballads.Such as the endearing Mama's Prayers,Down Girl which features Nancy Griffith on harmonies and the simply beautiful Rest Your Weary Mind. This features Bobby Bare jr and has such a gorgeous fiddle arrangement which reminds me a little of some Patty Loveless songs, plus Elizabeth's voice is so beautiful on this.Other lovely ballads are the easy listening, laid back Sunday Morning and Always Tomorrow.
Produced by the great Rodney Crowell and 9 of the 11 tracks written by Elizabeth this album is simply stunning. If you like your country music proper Country, then this album is an essential! You will not be disappointed.I can't recommed it enough....
