Amazon.co.uk Review
Like Blur, the Charlatans started out as seemingly slight "Madchester" wannabes: Remember the organ-driven hit "The Only One I Know", which nicked its hook from Deep Purple's "Hush"? But the group has matured over the last seven years, becoming a gutsy rock band with a penchant for psychedelicized blues, not unlike the Rolling Stones of Aftermath and Between the Buttons. Sadly, organist Rob Collins was killed in a car crash in Wales in July, 1996, midway through recording this album. His bandmates drew on their pain to complete a cathartic set of songs such as "With No Shoes" and "How Can You Leave Us", which serve as a fitting tribute. --Jim Derogatis
CD Description
One UK indie band to have well and truly lasted the course, the Charlatans are now seen as old lags of a new scene. With this, their most successful album to date, they lifted themselves from a pit of despair after the tragic death of keyboard player Rob Collins. Tragic and ironic because Collins gave their sound an original edge with his full-sounding Hammond organ. His replacement to complete the recording of thisalbum was Martin Duffy from Primal Scream. Excellent songs such as "North Country Boy" and "How High" are minor classics and the final instrumental doodle, "Rob's Theme", is a fitting tribute to Collins.
Customer Reviews
A fine album from an under-rated band
A classic cracker of an album. From the first tune "With No Shoes" the warbling of Burgess and the multi-layered musical backing provides a laid back rock out. For a band who experienced so much just before releasing the album that fact that its so good and polished is amazing. The death of member Rob Collins was a big blow but they retained the Hammond sound that is such a big part of their music. The superlative "One To Another" has to be one of the best tunes of the 90's. This is the band at the height of their powers and the depth of their despair. The Charlatans are criminaly under-rated in the music press and attract little attention. But one listen to their music is all that's needed to become a fan. They're still around long after many of their more highly lauded contemporaries have disappeared. Quite simply superb and well worth a listen. For anyone who likes British guitar bands then you must own this album.
Cornerstone of british music...
...it's now 4 years since tellin's tories release and it still sounds as good as it did back then. I've been a life long charlatans fan and now that they are getting on a bit and the tempo is slowing down, I always love the fact that this album reminds of the pace and drive they have. It oozes style, groove, and plain brilliant ability, this is a true reflection of what the best indie band ever in the uk can do. Spiewak jackets, puma trainers and the hair anyone? The good old days
Utterly excellent
I've already written a short review of this album but its brilliance warrants another tribute.
I can't work out why the Charlatons were never as big as the Stone Roses. They have a charismatic front man and their songs are vibrant and original but they are criminally ignored by critics and record buyers alike.
If you know nothing about the Charlatons then this is an excellent place to start. Earlier albums are very good but the influences are plain to see.
It is extremely rare to listen to a CD and to get knocked out by each successive track. - With No Shoes,North Country Boy,Tellin Stories,One to Another,How High - All excellent songs filled with depth, sincerity , power & humour.
