Pow.........................Pow...... Double whammy
Sorry to say I feel rather ripped off with this offering. On An Island CD, now with a red spine and a DVD as well. Great I thought, surely the On An Island CD will have something new to offer? Also it has Limited CD + DVD in silver letters stamped on it. So it can not just be directed at people who haven't been bothered to buy the original CD? Sadly it is, I hope Mr Gilmour was naive and didn't do this to rip off his fans who will buy his work no matter what.
So Now I am the not so proud owner of 2 On An Island cds 1 dvd. If this was the plan, then I am hurt. I know that Mr Gilmour does a lot for charity, like giving away his London House. If he wanted money? I would donate. I do buy the big issue from time to time......
So what are you getting for this reasonable priced CD+DVD, cheaper then I paid!! Well if you haven't got the CD anyway, it is a must then. The really great CD On an Island....
The Dvd is well, what can I say, basic, no, a let down, ummm. it is hard to say, depending how the hurt still stings.
Take A Deep Breath filmed at the Royal Albert Hall, very good.
Astronomy Domine. Abbey Road Session. Brilliant, fantastic, wonderful, the best, better then the Pulse version and I was there so I now what I am talking about.
Then basically a promo session for AOL. So forgive me for being a bit jaded. So this was done for promotion for the album or they were paid. Good selection though. Pity you didn't go for the AOL T-shirt and base ball cap, may I say you look nicer in a shirt!!! Couple of Floyd numbers, great. But Bloody annoying that the AOL logo is in the corner all the bleeding time. And That is it!!
I don't know if you saw that Brilliant BBC series Three Men in A Boat. The first episode you had them rowing down the Thames and stopping off at Gilmours truly beautiful recording studio barge. Really you can not call it that, it is a palace. What am I moaning about, well Mr Gilmour, seeing you allowed them to film for this as another small promo for On An Island release. Why couldn't your true fans who bought this CD+DVD, have a small guided tour by yourself on this DVD.
Don't worry I am not a crazed fan who hangs about his gate! I would just like to see what my hard earned cash has helped him to buy, doubly.
David Gilmour at his very best
Having become quite a big fan of Pink floyd in the last 6 months, I was very keen to get hold of this album when I heard the title track on the radio. Needless to say, I was instantly hooked and went out to buy it the next day.
I was not disappointed at all and this is a wonderful album to relax and chill out to after a hard day.
Each track is really strong and there is no filler at all. Here's my review of each one:
Castellorizon - A great opener with an orchestra playing underneath David's soaring guitar solo (9/10)
On An Island - The beautiful title track with stunning vocal harmonies by David Crosby and Graham Nash (10/10)
The Blue - Very relaxing song which makes the listener drift away (10/10)
Take A Breath - First real rocker where David really cuts loose and belts it out (9/10)
Red Sky at Night - Stunning instrumental featuring David on the saxophone (10/10)
This Heaven - Quite a bluesy rock number with some sweet guitar work (9/10)
Then I Close My Eyes - Another instrumental with some lovely orchestrations and a moving Cornet solo by Robert Wyatt (9/10)
Smile - One of my faves on the album. Very moving song with some great slide guitar work (10/10)
A Pocketful of Stones - Very atmospheric song with very memorable music and lyrics (9/10)
Where We Start - A charming and heartfelt song which closes the album nicely. David wrote this for his wife Polly for her birthday (10/10)
As if all this wasn't enough, the DVD packs in even more wonderful stuff. It has "Take a Breath" from last year's shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London which will be released on DVD later this year.
Next up is "Astronomy Domine" from the Abbey Road sessions. This is probably one of the best performances of this song.
Finally, the DVD concludes with the AOL Music Session tracks David did in New York City. It features "On An Island", "This Heaven", "Smile" & "Take a Breath" from the album. The set concludes with a very moving version of "High Hopes" from The Division Bell album and "Comfortably Numb" from The Wall.
Overall, this is an excellent package and if you like Pink Floyd or indeed appreciate good music, it is a great purchase and well-worth owning.
The master returns........
Now turned 60 years old, having played guitar for a lifetime, David Gilmour is musically timeless. The same basic song structures he has offered in his albums 'Looking Back' and 'David Gilmour' is thankfully present in this album. There still is, and hopefully always will be, that unmistakable Pink Floyd element ever present in his music.
Interspersing verses of what appears to be a kind of musical autobiography, he offers up thoughtful guitar solos that may wail painfully one minute and beckon you softly to share his thoughts the next.
Gilmour's style is unmistakable; he is a musician of the very highest calibre. Have a listen to this long overdue album and enjoy Gilmour being his inimitable self once again.
Gilmour is Gilmour is Gilmour..........
