Synopsis
From the pre-Roman port of Meols, through the Industrial Revolution to the pop revolution of the 1960s, the Mersey has been a constant influence on world trade and world events. Over its short length, the river has witnessed the birth of industrial civilisation, the brutality of the Slave Trade, the mass emigration to the New World, the popular music explosion of the 1960s and, in recent years, the emergence of the post-industrial society. With contributions from 12 experts in their fields, including Tony Wilson's last essay before his untimely death, and illustrated by top photographer Colin McPherson - "Mersey The River That Changed The World" is a book that will create waves.

MERSEY THE RIVER THAT CHANGED THE WORLD
Overall a thoroughly enjoyable read , the photography is excellent and narrative very informative. One small critisism is the unavoidable emphasis on the River at Liverpool. I would have liked to have seen more photographs from the upper reaches of the river in Manchester and Cheshire where the Mersey spends most of its time - perhaps more photos taken around Stockport and South Manchester. The book is still superb.
Stunning Images, diverse writing.
This book has stunning photography by the legendary Colin McPherson. It is filled with interesting stories and accounts about the river, its history and the surrounding area. A great book, released at the start of Liverpool's Capital of Culture year.
the mersey really did change the world
It may not be as wide as the Amazon or as long as the Nile but it is quite true that the Mersey changed the world as this remarkable book confirms. Most books on rivers focus on one aspect and are aimed at enthusiasts - wildlife or heritage or landscape for instance. This succeeds in having contributions from really good writers coming at the subject from completely different perspectives - Guardian journalist David Ward going for a walk; late lamented legend Anthony H Wilson on music: Chris Baines on wildlife...and the others. Colin McPherson's photographic essay of the Mersey from source to sea is a marvellously personal take...no boring travelogue here. Mersey the River that Changed the World raises the bar for books about rivers...it's a must read.
