Customer Reviews

Nice compilation with some original 50s #1s3
If you are collecting UK #1s on CD, this CD isn't a bad place to start with the 50s. In fact, it does contain some rare tracks.

The sound quality is good throughout, and as usual Spectrum use master tapes. You'll notice Spectrum can only use tracks licensed from certain labels. There are no EMI or Columbia USA #1s of the 50s on this compilation. The #1s are from a few American labels and British Decca and Philips.

Original versions are included of the majority of songs here. I know, as I've heard the actual records! However, I really don't like the policy here of including a stereo version wherever possible (discounting 80s remakes for labels like K-Tel). Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and It's Only Make Believe are the original chart-topping versions, but in stereo. Smoke Gets In Your Eyes is VERY badly separated, while It's Only Make Believe isn't as bad. Young Love, even worse is a stereo REMAKE!! I am almost certain this isn't the original recording. Two that are included here in mono, Hoots Mon and Moulin Rouge, aren't the original #1 versions. I don't know how these ones arose, and it's very hard to tell with instrumentals, but the originals sound quite different.

Thankfully, the rest are great, and it'll save you some money/time by not having to buy CDs just for some of these tracks!

Blast from the past!5
Great album, really brought back memories, my favourite was the Stargazers "I see the moon" which I find hysterical, I love to annoy the hell out of everyone by singing it. (Very badly!!)

If you're old enouigh to remember the 50's, this is well worth buying! And if you're not, buy it to see what you missed out on!

No.1's of the fifties2
I was a bit disapointed with this CD as it did not feature any new songs amongst the listing that I had not already heard. Sound quality good.
