The next volume of this hugely enjoyable trilogy. Rich, witty and argumentative.
Our TimesOur Times by A.N. Wilson

The final volume which will likely drive some readers round the bend. Opinionated, serious, and more entertaining than most other modern history books (especially Andrew Marr's).

Third Reich TrilogyThird Reich Trilogy by Richard J. Evans
This is a seminal multi-volume study of the Third Reich which should be on everyones shelf. A masterpiece.
The Rise and Fall of the Third ReichThe Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William L. Shirer

One of the great single-volume works on the Third Reich. Has some questionable comments on homosexuality which wouldn't be published today -- but it's still a classic one-volume study.
The Third Reich: A New HistoryThe Third Reich: A New History by Michael Burleigh

I personally prefer this recent mammoth book by the great Michael Burleigh than the above read. It will take a brave man to write another Third Reich history after this classic.

Hitler, The Germans, and the Final SolutionHitler, The Germans, and the Final Solution by Ian Kershaw
Buy new: £14.72 / Used from: £8.50

Earthly Powers: The Conflict Between Religion & Politics from the French Revolution to the Great WarEarthly Powers: The Conflict Between Religion & Politics from the French Revolution to the Great War by Michael Burleigh
Buy new: £6.95 / Used from: £2.89
A truly masterful book and intellectually rewarding. Burleigh is a great defender of religion, and a scathing critic of secular fundamentalism and tyranny.
Sacred Causes: Religion and Politics from the European Dictators to Al QaedaSacred Causes: Religion and Politics from the European Dictators to Al Qaeda by Michael Burleigh

An excellent comprehensive follow-up which ends with Al-Qaeda and Islamofascism today. (Ignore the one-star reviewers from the left-wing pro-IRA fan club) Read it.
World War One: A Short HistoryWorld War One: A Short History by Norman Stone

Fine, short, accessible history of WW1 by the great historian of the "Eastern Front". A firecracker of a book.

I couldn't put this great book down when I bought it. The relationship between the four men is fascinating, and a joy to read. My favourite historian.
Alexander the GreatAlexander the Great by Robin Lane Fox
Buy new: £7.59 / Used from: £2.25
There are hundreds of books on Alexander of Macedon, but this in my view is the best. It was a labour-of-love for the author and that shines through. Don't let that terrible Stone movie put you off.

My third favourite about the complex ambiguous genius. An absorbing read which has relevance for our ages as he compares him with the tyrants of our time.
