Amazing value for money
What a surprise that book has been for me,
I bought that book, in order to have something I could take along with me when I travel, and keep on studying modern Greek.. I was expecting something cheaply made and just common .
What a surprise. The book is very well organised. 360 pages, a nice format to handle, 45 chapters, very clearly written, loads of exercices and ways of practice what you ve learned, colour presentation.
Also, even though Greek has quite a bit of grammar (not as much as ancient Greek though, I must say.. so,no panic here..), this textbook makes the learning process very easy to grasp and to understand...no tricky words, no mysterious explanations that does leave you with a blank brain and the feeling of being stuck and without help...
This is an amazing value for money.
a very pleasant book to use, even if you don t have any knowledge of the Greek alphabet (everything is followed by its phonetic transcription anyway).
the 4 stars out of 5 is simply because there s no keys to the exercices, thus, it is NOT a book that can be used as the main textbook for self learners like me.
Not as good as the amazing "Greek Today" by Peter Bien. this Book is very close to achieve the same quality I must say
Great textbook for "old-fashioned" modern Greek
An entertaining and useful book for students of the Greek language, but the 1977 edition can only be recommended for those wanting to try their hand reading older modern Greek texts.
The style is formal, sometimes even pompous. The appendix goes into great detail regarding breathings and accent marks - all of which were abandoned in the early 1980s. The author says he intentionally steers a middle course between the puristic Greek "of the educated people" and the everyday demotic Greek spoken by people "that have lack of formal education" :-)
Very stylised, very thorough, often confusing, but always interesting.
