Customer Reviews
One Hundred Tracks from Ten Great British Bands
Anyone wanting a handy introduction to the Golden Age of British dance bands would do well to start with this bargain package. Here you can sample ten tracks each from Lew Stone, Geraldo, Jack Hylton, Ambrose, Carroll Gibbons, Harry Roy, Joe Loss, Ray Noble, Jack Payne, and Nat Gonella, no slouches, any of them. Al Bowlly features prominently amongst the vocalists, and Sam Browne, Denny Dennis, Chick Henderson, and Anne Lenner, put in appearances along with a host of others. If you're already well acquainted with the sort of delights that are on offer here you won't need me to tell you what a considerable bargain it represents. Look out also for the companion set Great British Dance Bands & Their Vocalists (PBX CD 447)
good value for money
This collection is well worth your attention. Many not too familiar items have been included which makes it a good complement to other releases (mainly on Vocalion). Although I myself am not too enamoured of bands like Nat Gonella, Joe Loss or Harry Roy (although his "She Had To Go And Lose It At The Astor" is a riot) and would gladly have seen th inclusion of other bands in their stead, this is a purely personal preference and I'm sure that other people will find their inclusion worth while. Remastering is better than on the companion disc, but again, no info about recording dates, which I personally find deplorable.
