PLEASURE WITH PAYNE5
NOTE: This review was written for the Living Era CD AJA 5487, the one with a coloured cover, but because Amazon is undiscriminating it has been posted also under the Pegasus CD of the same title (the one with the brown cover). I cannot delete one without deleting both!

I can remember when Jack Payne enthusiasts like myself were lucky to find the odd track within a compilation. Now, happily, the situation is much improved, thanks in part to this reissue. It runs from the early days of the BBC Dance Orchestra, via the Imperial era, to the Rex and Decca recordings. Some of these tracks had been reissued previously on vinyl, but I was delighted when they reappeared in CD format. Sound quality throughout is warm and full, and enables the vitality of the ensemble passages to be appreciated fully. Jack's rendition of the Malneck/Trumbauer composition "Choo Choo" bears comparison with the composer's and overall this is an excellent compilation.
