Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet--79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews
Spike Jones sets new Standards!
I'm listening to these as I type and make no mistake, these are excellent transfers with good sound quality.
Those of us who lost any musical taste we might have had to the excellent Mr Jones and his maniacal musicians years ago will be familiar with his commercial recordings issued on Victor and HMV. Indeed there are many CD reissues of them; and some might say that there is no need for yet another "Cocktails for Two" or "Chloe". NOT SO! For there was a time when American bands stopped making records...commercial ones anyway. In 1942 The American Federation of Musicians instigated a ban on recording ("You cannot expect musicians to keep playing at their own funeral") and from that point until the ban was lifted a couple of years later the only recordings made were the Standard Transcriptions for radio use and the V Discs made for Forces' use.
This compilation draws together the Standard recordings made by Spike and the City Slickers from '42 until the end of the war. Marvel at "Der Fuhrer's Face" with a trombone fonk replacing the Bronx cheer of the commercial disc...These recordings are slighly more decorous than the usual (although the similarities demonstrate the sheer discipline of the Jones band - it takes a good musician to play that badly so consistently!)
Disc quality and music rarity/quality make this set a MUST BUY.
So why 4 stars? These discs are packaged in a CARDBOARD triple sleeve like newspaper CD giveaways! I'm going to rebox mine as soon as I can get a 3CD jewelbox; I'm not keen on cardboard sleeves as I reckon that scratches on the CDs are more likely.
And at the published price that simply isn't good enough. Not when Proper Records can knock out a 4 CD set in jewelcases and a box at slightly less if I recall correctly.
But what's the use of beefing? You will want them. I wanted them. And thanks to Amazon Marketing, I've GOT them!
Rare Spike!
I can totally agree with everything R.A.Caton wrote in his review, though it's worth pointing out that a good proportion of the tracks are 'straight' numbers without the Slicker whackyness, proving yet again what a superb diciplined and versatile group this unique band was.Thank you Music Lovers.
