Superb Swing5
This is, in my opinion, the best transfer we have yet had of the Carnegie Hall concert of 1938. It s also complete in that the sections that surfaced on the recent Sony issue are included. In addition, this issue includes some of the very best of Goodman's recordings in the 1950's. These include most of the Capitol albums 'BG in Hi Fi' and 'Mr Benny Goodman' and a beautiful small group session 'Date with the King' recorded for Columbia in 1955 with Buck Clayton and Rosemary Clooney. The four disc set concludes with the complete soundtrack recordings made for 'The Benny Goodman Story'. Although the original arrangements are used, solo spots are not copies of the old routine. It is fascinating to hear Stan Getz's tribute to Lester Young in the tenor solo in 'One O'Clock Jump' and Goodman is continually stimulating both in big band and small group settings. The old quarted is reunited and Hampton, Wilson, and Krupa sound splendid together. Teddy Wilson also is band pianist throughout as Jess Stacy didn't take part in the sessions.

A splendid reissue.

Complete, and then some!5
Benny Goodman's Carnegie Hall Concert was a major event, not least for the prestigious nature of the venue, but it was recorded almost as an afterthought, and first saw the light of day over a decade later. It was reissued by Avid in their Gold Remasters series, and is now repackaged as part of a 4-CD set, with a total running time of over 5 hours. The quality of the remastering is quite superb, with a degree of clarity and a spacious acoustic which makes prolonged listening effortless. Hearing these performances again, I was struck by the sense of occasion that is conveyed by the presence of the very appreciative audience. The Concert now includes the full-length jam session on "Honeysuckle Rose", and "Sometimes I'm Happy" together with "If Dreams Come True" have been restored to their rightful place.

The package has been topped up by recordings from the mid-50s, and my only minor cavil is the duplication of material from the soundtrack of "The Benny Goodman Story" on discs 3 & 4, albeit by a different line-up on each. That will not matter to fans of "The King Of Swing", and nor should it deter would-be purchasers because the set represents superb value for money.

I have the LP's of this concert but the remastered CD's are something else! There are instruments unheard before and the balance between back and front line is amazing. Congratulations a superb re-release
