Editorial Reviews

CD Description
When it comes to the era of the big bands many Americans forget (or never knew) that Great Britain had a substantial swing and dance scene of its own. The bandleader Ambrose, though British, got some of his musical training in the USA, anda few American musicians even joined him. His dance band was as popular in the U.K. as Glenn Miller's or Tommy Dorsey'sin America--in fact, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy's brother and a leader himself, greatly admired the Ambrose orchestra. While less jazz-oriented than dance-oriented, the Ambrose 1929 SESSIONS displays a classy band at the height of its powers at the beginning of what would be Britain's own Swing Era.

SHORT MEASURE, AND BETTER ALTERNATIVES AVAILABLE2
Many years have elapsed since Halcyon produced an LP of Ambrose' Decca "M" series recordings (the other being by Saville), so a CD reissue was long overdue. Sadly, this Sounds of Yesteryear CD is a carbon copy of the Halcyon LP, and weighs in at a mere 16 tracks (don't be deceived by Amazon's bizarre listing). Fortunately, two others were released near simultaneously, that is by Vocalion and Retrieval. Both offer at least two dozen tracks, and only "Reaching For Someone" on the Sounds of Yesteryear compilation does not appear on either of those other two CDs.
