A very practical guide4
This book is excellent. It is full cover-to-cover with schematics, and explainations of the design and electronic principles of each.

It starts off with fairly simple designs, and then continues to build on and combine these into much more complex devices.

It does still assume some prior knowledge - and therefore is not really recommended as a tutorial, however it is an excellent circuit reference for a robot builder, and probably any other amateur electronics person wanting to create devices with parts that move.
