a must have
this is 5 discs with great features and commentaries too -harper -drowning pool and mckintosh man are a trilogy about a private eye and all 3 are cool ,thrillers with a touch of film noir and each is classic in it's own right.
somebody up-is a story of the rise of a common con to the mid weight boxing champ as rocky and is a very realistic portrait of a boxer ,
while left handed gun is a violent western with an atmospheric portrayal of a vendetta gone wrong and all five together are great to have in one box -well worth for the commentary alone in harper.
Really great box set
I've just finished watching Harper (Moving Target), from my new purchase, a very well priced box set (at the moment) containing 2 Harper films, an espionage thriller set in England and Ireland (I love it when big Hollywood stars do movies over here), a cool western and the man's debut movie, as Rocky M. But I know already I've seen the best of them, one of the best films Newman made, and possibly one of the best detective thrillers ever made. It sizzles with style, entertainment and humour and introduces a new graphic realism to the private eye movie. It is also very noir, and precedes the more lauded Chinatown by eight years! This movie reinvented the genre and had a stack of very good imitators follow it. The (Goldman) screenplay is simply brilliant, as is Newman who here shows he has a sense of humour to go with the looks and the acting ability. Some men are born under a lucky star.
All films have great extra features as mentioned by chap above, and they come in those ultra slim cases which I love, and wish all DVDs were boxed in. It is one of the best purchases I've made and I can't wait to see the other 4 movies. If you are a Paul Newman fan (and let's face it, who isn't?) then snap this one up. An absolute bargain.
Except....
It's no doubt a great box set, and with an appealing price it's hard to resist BUT the Region 1 box set has 2 extra films. Pocket Money and The Young Philadelphians is the reason I went with the Region 1 (USA and Canada) box set.
Hardly seems fair now does it.
