Exciting and entertaining Regency romp
When she was eighteen years of age, Charlotte Page made a rash mistake that changed the course of her life and made her live with a guilt that has never really gone away.
However she managed to start her life over as the respectable Mrs Charlotte Harris opening a prestigious school for girls with the help of an anonymous benefactor, "Cousin Michael".
Unbeknownst to her, "Cousin Michael" is the man from her past that she wronged so badly. To save her school, she now needs his help again - but will he be able to give it without revealing his identity and revealing all the ugly secret behind his charade?
This is the final book in Jeffries' School For Heiresses series coming after: (Never Seduce A Scoundrel, Only a Duke Will Do, Beware a Scot's Revenge, Let Sleeping Rogues Lie and Don't Bargain With the Devil. (There is also a short novella within the series in The School for Heiresses anthology). While it might be more satisfying if you have read the other books in the series, this story does stand alone quite nicely.
I really enjoyed this story - it was filled with excitement, love, sex, rogues, secrets, betrayals, murder and everything else you need to make a fantastic story. Both Charlotte and "Cousin Michael" are great characters, have fabulous chemistry but have enough problems and obstacles to overcome to keep the pages turning and make you not want to put the book down.
I have really enjoyed every book in the School For Heiresses series but this is definitely one of my favourites. It's lively, entertaining and really encompasses you in the Regency era and the love story. If you enjoy a good, satisfying Regency romance then I would definitely recommend this book to you. 5 stars.
And Cousin Michael is... ?
For fourteen years Charlotte Harris has been running the School for Heiresses, with the assistance and advice of the mysterious Cousin Michael's letters. But now the school is in real danger from ex-pupil scandals and a racecourse next door, yet Charlotte's `cousin' is nowhere to be found.
Eighteen years ago, a young heiress herself, Charlotte wronged and near ruined a man. Now he's back in her life, offering aid in her time of need. But can she trust him? What if he's just out for revenge? Where is Cousin Michael when she truly needs him - or is he far closer than she thinks?
And so the School for Heiresses series (Never Seduce A Scoundrel, Only a Duke Will Do, Beware a Scot's Revenge, Let Sleeping Rogues Lie, Don't Bargain With the Devil) comes to an end, and the identity of Cousin Michael is revealed at last! Which makes this hard to review without spoilers. I must admit he wasn't who I expected (and hoped), so I did start off reading this a little disgruntled (the reveal comes within the opening chapters).
However, Jeffries builds a good relationship between the two, based on their shared past and freshly reunited present - until the fates (or Bow Street) conspire to separate them, all `Cousin Michael's' secrets are revealed and danger looms over them both.
Jeffries works her usual magic and weaves a convincing romance, with cameos from the other novels (apart from Lucy and Diego), everything is tied up in a neat little bow. Except for a couple of gentlemen I hope Jeffries intends to return to soon... (not least Pinter, as he leaves a mystery than needs to be solved).
A deserving end to a great series.
Wed him before you bed him by Sabrina Jeffries
A very satisfactory conclusion to the mystery of Cousin Michael and the School for Heiresses series. Lots of twists and turns before all is ended hapily. One wonders what theme the author will choose for her next series.
