Manufacturer's Description
The EF 85mm f/1.2L USM II is a fast lens that delivers superb optical performance. A maximum aperture of f/1.2 makes it the professional's choice for shooting without flash in low light conditions.
L-series quality The EF 85mm f/1.2L USM II incorporates Canon’s highest standards of precision optics. The L-series is Canon’s flagship professional lens range, combining outstanding image performance and ultimate operability with dust and moisture resistant construction.
Large f/1.2 aperture A large maximum aperture of f/1.2 provides outstanding speed for shooting in low light conditions, without the need for flash. The large aperture also provides fine control over depth of field for compelling portrait photography.
Excellent background bokeh A circular barrel aperture helps to create attractive, even background bokeh when isolating subjects at large apertures.
Fast, quiet auto focus A ring USM (Ultrasonic motor) uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to drive extremely rapid auto focus with near-silent operation. A high-speed CPU and optimised AF algorithms contribute further to AF speed. Good holding torque stops the focusing lens group without overshoot. Full time electronic manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF.
Super Spectra coatings Super Spectra lens coatings and lens element shaping suppress flare and ghosting - more prone to occur with digital cameras due to reflection off the image sensor. Coatings also help achieve true colour balance and increase contrast for vivid hi-fidelity images.
Passes distance information to E-TTL II The lens passes distance information back to the camera's E-TTL II flash system to ensure optimal flash metering in any shooting situation.
Accessories The EF 85mm f/1.2L USM II lens comes supplied with a cylindrical lens hood and a soft case.
Fixed focal length lenses generally offer a wider maximum aperture than zoom lenses. From ultra-wide angle lenses ideal for indoor shooting to long telephoto lenses extensively used for wildlife, sports and news photography Canon has the fixed focal length lens to suit you.

A lens with a lot of (asperical) bottle
Opened the sealed box - lens in hand - panic - manual focus DOES NOT WORK!
Later after phone call to Canon - agree to try it on camera body first and then decide if it needs to go back for repair. Back home - connected to my EOS 40D and - voila! - the lens comes to life. It appears that the manual focus actually uses the USM rather than a mechanical connection so the lens needs to be powered. Finally found an obscure reference in the instructions confirming this. I really feel that as this lens is different to the usual Canon lenses, then Canon should emphasise this in their documentation and inform their telephone support staff - ah well.
As to the lens performance - this one certainly sets the standard. Colour (chromatic) abberation is non existant, barrel and pincushion distortion undetectable, viginetting is nearly zero and the resolution probably exceeds the sensor resolution (10.1 Mpix) on the EOS40D (APS C sensor). Great for portraits but even better for isolating flowers from their background foliage. Very pleasing bokeh due to the circular apperture. All in all an excellent lens once you read the instructions carefully.
Killer Glass
This has to be one of the ultimate bits of glass on the planet. Ultra precise, gorgeous falloff ratios, a range of DoF that is just about second to none. The only bad thing about it? Er... it makes life too easy.
Delays
This item like most items I have bought from Amazon but supplied by a third party took a long time to arrive. I do not expect an item ordered on line to take 2 weeks to arrive. Efficient companies that I have dealt with direct supply items that arrive within 20 hours.
In consequence of the above I now check carefully when ordering from Amazon to see whether a third party supplier is involved; if they are I do not deal with Amazon over that item. It is easy enough to find those that supply direct.
