Garmin Foretrex 201
Hi there!
Just got the Foretrex 201 yesterday, nice piece of kit, and easier to use than the ETrex and other units that Garmin make. Seems to work ok, smaller than i'd expected, but easy to see the display, navigate around and use.
Backlight is very good, even in total darkness, and enables the user to read the screen at arm's length. The strap is good and easy to adjust and should fit most people quite well.
No built in base map, but then you knew that before you looked here, didn't you...
I'm going to be using the device for giving quick locations and navigation in areas where I know roughly where I am, but would like to be able to get straight to a place quickly.
I bought this unit rather than the 101, because it is rechargeable. The charger is massive though, so don't think you'll be able to just stash it in your rucksack.
Great piece of kit
Have used the unit for two months now. Twice windsurfing in Januray and 6 times mountain biking. Its very good fun but the addittional software to load on to your PC is a must . Only downside was the strap bar on the unit gave away after a bad catapult windsurfing. Fortunatley the remaining bar held . Have reinforced unit to strap using ducttape. Would highly recommend this unit to windsurfers with the caveat above.Excellent for mountainbikers . Plan to use it skiing in America next week.
Trip computer is a great source of info with trip distance and max speed recorded. Very useful technology for windsurfing.
Unwilling to talk to my PC
I have just returned the second Foretrex 201 I bought. Each one refused to talk to my PC. I tried them with different cables, different PCs and different PC software, but no joy. When it happened with one GPS I was puzzled, when it happened exactly the same with the second I began to think I was doing something wrong, but having checked it again and gone through Garmin's online support notes I am sure I am not. This is very poor!
