Product Description

This pocket-sized comprehensive classic, crammed with useful facts, is back in a fully-updated 13th edition. Ideal for the practising anaesthetist or senior trainee, it covers a vast range of topics in a clear, concise and readable style. Focusing on the practical rather than the theoretical, it discusses both rare and common conditions. General sections cover topics such as preparation, techniques, post-operative care and pain management, whilst other sections discuss anaesthesia for specific operations and situations.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
The role of the practising anaesthetist is extending and advancing apace with the ever increasing flood of specialist literature. The eleventh edition of this comprehensive guide to anaesthetic practice fulfills the important aims achieved by its predecessors in bringing together all that is relevant within the speciality in a structure, concise and instructive way. The present authors have ensured it remains an up to date, quick reference guide to the whole scope of general and localanaesthesia, as well as cardiorespiratory intensive care and the management of pain. Therefore, each chapter has been rewritten and much new material has been added covering important areas such as acute and chronic pain, safety in anesthetic practice, medicolegal aspects, audit and the use of computers, magnatic resonance imaging and the management of trauma patients. The history of anaesthesia is considered important and now appears as a section at the end of the book to which has been added a chapter on agents and techniques no longer in common use, except in some parts of the developing world.

Peface To The 10th Edition.5
For this tenth edition the authors have felt it necessary to make substantial changes to the text. Most pages have been extensively revised and much material formerly included has been removed to make way for newer information and newer references. Many of the references excised can be found in previous editions. Nevertheless the overall size of the book has increased. We believe it is due to an increase in muscle rather than fat, to sturdiness and not to obesity.

The number of anaesthetic texts has proliferated in recent years, making it difficult and expensive for the young trainee to make a choice. In this volume it is hoped that he [she] will be able to refer to most topics of current interest in a small book offered at a reasonable price. As in earlier editions, an effort has been made to provide references for further reading and we hope that these will continue to prove useful. Once again, in discussing techniques we have not forgotten those anaesthetists who work in underdeveloped areas and may not have access to all the recently introduced techniques now commonplace in our modern hospitals.

For this edition there has been a major re-organization of the text which is now divided into six parts. The first deals with History. As in former editions we make no apology for this, believing that a knowledge of the past can enable practitioners to understand the roots from which present practice derives. We are indebted to Professor Ole Secher for providing additional historical data and hope that the synopsis of Anaesthesia will continue to be a valuable source of information for those interested in the history of our speciality. Basic Sciences, General Anaesthhesia, Choice of Anaesthetic, Regional Techniques and Intensive Therapy form the five main divisions of the book.
