FIXING SLOW OPERATION OF TV GUIDE AND RECORDED PLAYBACK5
I too had the same problem with this item that several people did in regard to delayed stuttery play back and also slow responses when using the built in TV guide/Freeview. I phoned Samsung and they posted me a DVD which updates the software in the unit and bingo now works fine. Phone number for Samsung is 0845 7267864

samsung dvd-sh871m/xeu5
i orderd 1 of the samsung hdd dvd recorders from a seller on amazon,it came from germany, and i have never looked back, it works great,i had a vcr-dvd combo before, and this samsung blows it right out of the water, the ease of use is fantastic, and when veiwing the free view and a dvd through a hdmi conection well its just fantastic,i would highly recamend this item to anyone, and it is really easy to use, only sad thing is that i only orderd the 160gb moddle and not the 250gb one, great peace of kit a+

Disappointing3
Having bought this to replace a 3 1/2 year old Panasonic HDD recorder and to work with a Samsung TV, we've been disappointed that the recording capabilities are less/worse than from the older technology.
We've programmed it to automatically record from the TV, but with no success, so have stopped relying on the timer & do it manually. Having transferred films, with the intention of copying them to disc, the cumbersome editing facilities make this a chore. Perhaps we were spoilt by the precision of Panasonic, but had not expected things to have gone backwards since getting that
If you stop a recorded programme (or pause it for longer than about 10 minutes), it goes back to the beginning. Who remembers to place a "marker" when the phone rings?
It buzzes/whines when certain DVDs are played. We returned the first machine as the level was unacceptable, but as it still occurs on the replacement machine with some DVDs, this seems to be a design fault.
Overall, this doesn't live up to the high standard we expect of Samsung products.
