    Who doesn't like toasties???5
I bought my parents a Kenwood SM606 as a replacement for their old sandwich toaster (you know, the kind everyone bought in the 70's and 80's) when it died on them after many years of service. The problem with the old one was that, whilst the sandwiches it made were really tasty, its shape meant it could only take ordinary sliced bread and it wasn't the easiest kitchen contraption to clean. The SM606 does equally good toasties but tops the old one by being able to make paninis, Italian sandwiches and loads of other bread-related sweet and savoury snacks - in fact almost any type of bread can be used, including baguettes, ciabatta and focaccia.

It isn't the most elaborate or complicated thing to use, you simply switch it on, wait for it to heat up and then pop in your chosen snack. It heats up fairly rapidly and grills sandwiches in five minutes or so, with the end result always tasting good. The grilling plates are shaped very similarly to those on a certain Lean Mean Grilling Machine (you know, the kind everyone bought in the 90's) so that excess butter is allowed to run out leaving the sandwiches crisper; a lip around the lower plate edge ensures that any excess doesn't spill out over the worktop. The shape of the plates also makes cleaning much easier - just wipe over them with a damp cloth after use.

The SM606 is a pretty big and heavy item but it does feel sturdy and it can always be stored upright if room is at a premium, although keeping it secreted away does seem a bit of a waste given its really classy chrome finish. This finish also makes cleaning the exterior much less of a chore, again you just wipe over it with a damp cloth.

I can't promise that if you buy this it'll be anything other than a 'use a couple of times and then never use again' item, but it really is so simple to use and maintain that I'm pretty sure it'd get quite a lot of use. If you have a hankering for toasted snacks then this is probably as good, quick and easy a way to make them as you can get.

    Best thing since sliced bread!5
Posh sandwiches! I've used all sorts of bread -From very thick Ciabatta to very thin pitta -all fantastic. Takes very little time to heat up. A few minutes to cook. If you mke a mess with the cheese DON'T WORRY!! as soon as it cools it just easily wipes off! Unfortunately the plug doesn't stow away easily BUT the sandwiches ARE great!

The last word in sandwich toasters.........5
Well may be not the last word, but it's difficult to see what more you might need from a sandwich toaster.

I used to have one of those Breville toasters, designed for bread half the size of the current standard loaf slice, which either sealed the toastie round the edges or squeezed all the stuffing out. Didn't use it very much because it was to messy an difficult to clean.

This Kenwood one is so straight forward and easy to clean we are now regular toastiers.

I have not tried grilling anything on it or perhaps not tested it to it's fullest range of capabilities, but i only want it for a toasted sandwich so for that it's great.
