The best portable HDD on the market,
I have been a fan of Western Digital Hard Drives for a long time, and this portable offering certainly helps to reinforce my trust in this manufacturer. As a consultant I am regularly travelling between client sites and need a portable storage device that can hold large amounts of data; for virtual PC images, source code and ISO images of CD's and DVD's. The WD passport drive is bus powered so I don't need to lug a power supply with it; and it will fit comfortably in a shirt pocket.
The drive speed is not as fast as an internal drive so running applications from it would not be advisable, but as a storage device it is perfect. Because it relies on bus power the length of USB cable is critical, the shorter the better, so don't lose the provided cable.
Absolutely Brilliant!!!
I bought this hard drive to replace my much larger, bulkier hard drive which requires mains power. I wanted a portable hard drive with the same capacity, but ran off USB power from my MacBook.
This HD is just what I was looking for. Comes in glossy white to match my MacBook, 160GB so more than enough space for backing up using Time Machine and it runs off USB power so I can just let Time Machine do its thing without having to manually plug in a HD every time I wanna backup.
The HD comes in a relatively small package, with not much on the way of instructions which is good from my point of view. There is software on the HD for Windows users, but I just plugged it straight into my MacBook and changed the default disk to this HD in Time Machine Preferences. It asked if I wanted to format the drive before it could use it t backup and it then went ahead and did a complete backup of my entire system. And by default Time Machine auto backups up in the background roughly every half hour. So an incredibly easy to use product and just what I was looking for to complement my MacBook and Time Machine.
Obviously I'm only looking at this from the perspective of a Mac user so can't comment on how well this HD will work on Windows or how the added software will work. But if you own a Mac and want a HD to go with Time Machine then look no further, this is an incredibly easy to use product and looks the part too.
Two minor points though - 1) the USB lead is rather short, around 30cm in length which is fine for me, but might not suit everybody 2) when you back up for the first time it takes an incredible amount of time, took me around an hour and a half to back up my entire system. I'm used to a Firewire connection which is quite fast compared to the USB 2.0 that this device uses. But one you've backed up for the first time subsequent backups are much quicker.
A highly recommended product and at a good price too.
Passport does the job at great value
Just bought this little Hard Drive for my Macbook and its so quietly efficient. I previously had a bad experience with a LaCie drive which wouldn't mount and got the WD for less than half the price. Just plugged in - it worked. I use it for storing music samples as a source for Ableton Live and speed-wise its no problem. Also, the USB port powers the drive fine. All in all, a good value and efficient product.
