the fourth and final audio play in the third series of audios featuring sapphire and steel. based on the old ITV tv series they are two strange beings who stop threats to reality from creatures from outside of it.

as usual with big finish plays this story lasts for four episodes, spread over two discs. since it's the final one to be produced by the man who has produced these three series, the first disc ends with a nineteen minute retrospective of his work on the series, with favourite scenes and outtakes, and similar for the audios based on the show the tomorrow people as he also produced those. there are no spoilers for wall of darkness in this bit, but it needs to be on the end of disc one because of the way episode four ends.

but I can't say any more about that without spoilers.

I would recommend hearing all of these audios in order to get the most out of them. so if you're new to them start with audio 1.1 the passenger as it's a good jumping on point.

in this story sapphire and steel arrive in a deserted shopping mall in san francisco, and are quickly separated, finding themselves in some strange settings. they get to dealing with a british woman and her family who have some dark secrets. long sections of the story do involve long speeches from the actors playing these characters, detailing what they're hiding, and these are superb. excellently acted and very maturely written bits of characterisation.

in typical sapphire and steel fashion the truth is slowly revealed and as always it's a pleasure watching how things work out. but there are hints of other things going on here throughout, and the last episode [parts two and three run the usual twenty five minutes but the first and last are thrity minutes long] suddenly has a big twist, in order to provide a conclusion to the season. it could also be a conculsion to the series of audios, if there isn't a fourth one, so it has to do that as well.

and whilst it's very clever and has lots of twists and turns, and you really should not stop the cd till it turns itself off as it may make you think it has finished early, it does rather go over some old ground, so it's a bit of a frustrating finish.

a shame. because all in all these three seasons have been great, and I really hope there's a fourth
