Product Description

This book shows advanced ABAP programmers new concepts, technologies, techniques, and functions that have been introduced to ABAP ("Release 7.0") in the last few years. Based on a single real-world example that runs throughout the book - a university upgrading from SAP R/3 4.6C to SAP NetWeaver 2004s - you'll follow along with the university's lead ABAP developer as he develops a custom course booking system. This unique approach allows readers to view the entire process of design, development, and testing - right through the eyes of a developer. You'll quickly familiarize yourself with all of the new possibilities in ABAP while discovering a series of actual scenarios that could easily be encountered in a real-life project. In certain areas the author also provides you with a glimpse towards upcoming ABAP releases, as well as references to former releases, as required.

Customer Reviews

Excellent all-in-one5
This book is definitely a nice buy if you would like to learn the new innovations in the ABAP world. The book uses a simple language and clear examples. All of the examples are tied into a common scenario. You can see how two ABAP gurus, Rich Heilman and Thomas Jung, used their ABAP expertise in a passionate way to author this practical book.

The only downside of the book is that some basic points are missing in complicated topics like Web Services and SAP NW Portal. It is certainly the authors's initiative or this may be due to my understanding level. Since this is kind of an all-in-one book, the authors must have also tackled with the problem of condensing the topics. However, for the most of the topics this is handled very well.

And there is a problem about testing the examples given in the book. It is not easy to find an SAP system to test the examples. The trial versions of SAP NW may suffice to a level. However, it is almost not possible to test some advanced stuff.

The bottom line is: If you are an ABAP developer and want to improve your skills with the recent developments, then this book is definitely a good choice for a start.

And my more precise rating would be 4.5 over 5.
