An inspiring, full-colour survey of designs and patterns for feltmaking
At first I had to borrow this book from college as it was a while in coming into stock on Amazon, but now that I have my own copy at home the more highly I prize it and appreciate the inspiration that it gives me!
I now see that this book deserves **5*** stars! (But the system wont let me make the change to the star rating, only to the script.)
Françoise Tellier-Loumagne, the author, has taught textile and knit design in France for more than forty years. She has a wonderful sense of the language of texture and an exquisite eye for colour and form. This book is an inspiring full-colour survey of designs and patterns for feltmaking.
Felt is often thought of as a sturdy practical material, but it can, with innovation, be very versatile, even esoteric, like a pastel painter's pallet.
The book includes basic techniques that can be used to create felted fabrics from scratch, such as needle-felting and tufting, along with imaginative ideas for ready-made felt. But this book takes it further. It shows how in handmade felting you can achieve subtle variations in colour, texture, and volume as threads and fibbers merge almost magically to form new images that can then be embellished further by embroidered or crocheted details.
We are shown how Françoise original approach to the world of feltmaking finds design inspiration in calm morning skies, spectacular sunsets, and brilliant fireworks displays. We are inspired to see how the image of clouds across the moon can be turned into a beautiful necklace, or how the image of a stormy sky can inspire a striking scarf or cushion cover.
The plethora of inspiring images in this book will be a treasure trove of ideas for anyone interested in original textile design.
Great book, slightly misleading title
It's a beautiful book, great photos, but the English title is a bit misleading: the whole book is devoted to interpreting skies and clouds in felting. That's clear in the original French title, but has got lost in the English translation. Nevertheless, it covers its particular themes magnificently.
5 stars
I too have seen this book. I'm just about to order my own copy. So inspiring and beautiful to look through the many, many pages of vibrant colour photos of both the felts and the inspiration behind them. The previous reviewer said it deserved five stars - I wonder why she only awarded it four!
