The smell of Catterick5
The genius of Reeves & Mortimer shine through once again. After the disappointing Randall & Hopkirk i was a bit wary of this but after a few short minutes i realised they were back to their best. The story of two brothers reunited after fifteen years and the quest to find a long lost son may sound like the work of a heavy drama but you couldnt be further from the truth. This is the duo at their surrealist and funniest, and with appearences from Reece Shearsmith as a psychotic madman, Matt Lucas as a crazy hotel owner and his long suffering girlfriend played by Morwenna Banks this really does hit the mark every time.

Worth it just for Mr Shearsmith4
I watched this series out of idle interest, but quickly became involved with it. Catterick is a brilliant, original, filmic series that draws you in with it's surreal storyline, setting and characters. Fans of Vic & Bob, Matt Lucas from Little Britain, Reece Shearsmith from the league of Gentlemen or just good comedy should watch this undeservedly overlooked series. People new to Vic & Bob's writing may need an episode or two to get used to it - it is, after all, a little on the weird side - but people who watch it from beginning to end will be rewarded with a clever and funny show that's simply a joy to watch. And underneath the freakish comedy there's real emotional depth as well.

Highlights include the cast miming to catchy musical numbers in between key scenes, and some brilliant perfomances. Particuarly from Tim Healy's demented, rambling monologues and Reece Shearsmith's character, the villain Tony.

Shearsmith is on his best form since the last League of Gentlemen series as the unhinged young kleptomaniac, quite happily murdering and torturing his way to revenge. But towards the end of the series he also shows him for what he really is, a deeply twisted and broken individual. His performance is insane, aggressive, hypnotic, and still makes for the best bittersweet comedy I've seen in years. Catterick is still a very good series, but Mr Shearsmith really makes it great.

The explosive climax is a little too predicatable but nevertheless heartbreaking and manages to leave a little hope of a second series, although there's been no news of it so far.

Anyone with an open-minded sense of humour should do themselves a favour and see this series. It deserves a special place in anyone's comedy DVD collection.

Good Bits - Fabulous comedy performances
- Surprisingly absorbing plot
- Well above-average soundtrack

Bad Bits - Some crude, childish humour lets down an otherwise good script
- Fans may be disappointed that Vic & Bob end up taking back seat to the very talented supporting cast

Funny in a wierd way4
The first genuinely funny, non-sketch based Reeves and Mortimer series. Catterick focusses it's attention on Carl Palmer and his brother Chris, as they look for Carl's long lost son. If you saw "Bang Bang, It's Reeves And Mortimer" you will recognise them as the bouncers from Paul Baron's nightclub, although I don't think it is meant to be related to it chronologically in any way.

Also present is an appearance from a character loosely based on "Kinky John Fowler" (another employee of Paul Baron), but this character is not quite as disturbing.

There are also some great characters played by Matt Lucas; the owner of The Mermade Hotel (it's not my typo), who has an accent I cannot place anywhere. He also plays Dan the Shellfish Man.

There are also appearances from Morwenna Banks, Tim Healy, Reece Shearsmith, Charlie Higson and Mark Benson. Catterick seems to have some of the best alternative comedy actors.

Very funny in the surreal way that only Vic and Bob can pull off. The only thing that makes me take away a star is the fact that it is only very loosely based on the characters from The Club. If you have not seen "Bang Bang" then D.I. Keith Fowler will mean nothing to you and is a bit of a weak character.

I would still be happy to sit through the whole series again because I think anything Reeves and Mortimer do gets funnier with repetition. It's got the feel of classic Vic and Bob combined with The League of Gentlemen, and it's good stuff.
