Amazing Phrasing
I'm a teacher so it's good when I come across really well-written and presented material which sets out the learning aims before anything else. Even where this book covers issues in common with other books, it explains why you ought to know these things, and how the exercises in the book will help you to do so, so it fires you up to learn before you have even started.
The layout makes everything clear and simple. It's not dozens of tightly crammed pages. There is a lot of space around each point, generally a short paragraph, enabling you to focus on its meaning and content. It looks friendly rather than daunting: I had to go to teachers' training college to lay out things like this.
He explains that he wants to develop your ear, and the thrust of the book, and its exercises work towards that. I wish it had been written earlier, as it would have saved me buying several other books that cover similar topics but not as clearly, also not in such simple 'bite sized chunks' that fit in easily with your practice session.
The riffs are nice, the back tracks are good and I felt when I opened it that I would be a much better musician for working through the course. The whole package inspires confidence and makes you feel you are in the hands of someone who not only knows their stuff, but also how to communicate it.
I commend this book to you. I can't imagine anyone regretting buying this book.
Amazing Phrasing
This book is good. Not for the beginner but ideal for the intermediate player who is struggling to get past a plateau.
It's well laid-out and supported by a really good CD. It can be followed sequentially or 'dipped into' in response to your particular areas of interest.
I've spent a couple of hours with it and can already perceive progress. Modes? Tritone substitution? Both de-mystified and demonstrated in a fashion that encourages you to explore further.
I've been learning/playing sax for a long time and this is the best book I've encountered.
Amazing Phrasing for Tenor sax
The book is excellent. It deals with harmony, rhythm and all types of scales used in jazz and many other aspects of jazz playing. I can thoroughly recommend it. There is a CD that you can try out your ideas with. Very good value! Tony Riley
