"Making Slough Happy" is made by award-winning independent production company Optomen, with prime-time programming on BBC2, transmitting in November 2005. One of the boldest social experiments ever undertaken, this unique television event brings happiness experts from all fields and gives them just four months to make the town of Slough happy. A fact: Although genes and upbringing influence about 50% of our happiness, circumstances (income, living environment) only affects 10%. The remaining 40% is accounted for by our outlook on life, something we all have the power to change for the better. A simple happiness exercise: keep a diary and once a week write in it things for which you are thankful over the past week. That's it. This is a simple but effective technique - people who did it over 6 weeks reported a significant increase in their sense of happiness and satisfaction. Published against the series, "How to be Happy" combines the very latest research with advice and exercises from the experts to give you the truth about happiness and practical ways to increase your own happiness quota.

A great book to help you get happy
This is a very useful book which helps people see improvements in their lives in very practical ways. I love the happiness manifesto and the 12 steps to happiness - they're very useful and there are some 'worksheets' in the book which are also helpful. I don't agree with the 12 commandments of 'Happiness at Work' however (too simplistic) and some of the book is over-reliant on the theorising of Barry Schwartz & Mihaly Csik. which didn't make much sense to me. I also think the design /strucutre of the book could be improved; there could be some nice relaxing images and/or photos, there could be less about the various authors and the book could be paperback. Overall it is worth getting.
Gentle laughs, smart advice
Liz Hoggard is one of the funniest writers around, and in this little gem, she is able to hit all the right buttons. Thought the cover and formatting was a bit 80s, though -- not her fault, but that of the publishers's marketing department!
Perfect Xmas present
Perfect therapy for Mr or Miss Grumpy without causing offence.
