Pure Williams
What can I say, it's John Williams. One can't compare this soundtrack to the magnificent works done for Jurassic Park, as like the film, they are very different. The score is dark, and has a native sort of feeling, which is evident in 'Rescuing Sarah' and 'Raptors Appear'amongst others. The use of bongos and other such instruments create an eerie and tense atmosphere, one which fits the film well. The main 'Lost World' theme, is perhaps less memorable than the Jurassic Park theme, but it conveys the story brilliantly, the thunderous use of trumpets and drums help to create a truly ancient score.
Don't ignore this score!
The "Lost world is not a re-score of "Jurassic park". But no one ever said it was. A majority of people may not have liked the second movie's rougher edge and darker tones, but those same people will not deny that John Williams has yet again created a perfect score for one of Splielberg's films.
There are many hints of the majestic melodies and granduer-like effects of "Jurassic Park" that pop-up throughout the Lost World. "Finding camp jurassic", "The stegosauras" and "Finale and Jurassic park theme" all include this. But alot of the music reflects the darker moods in the sequel. John Williams seamlessly blends in his famous "Jurassic park" tunes with helpings of brooding music, action music and light-hearted music. My favourite track on this CD, apart from track 14 ("Finale and Jurassic park theme") is track 14 ("The lost world") because it is a welcome new awe-inspiring theme for the film, in my opinion.
The first half of this CD is great. The main theme is a common occurance in these tracks, but is never really used again. The music starts to drag on a little bit after that, largly due to the fact that it is the same brooding music repeated. But with the exception of track 11 ("The stegosauras") a hauntingly reminicent of the music for the first film, and i think it sound great! And finally, the end track ("Finale and Jurassic park theme") is an excellent clean finish to this brilliant score.
John Williams uses a vast range of instruments in this soundtrack. The most unique are of all the percussion, as these were not really used in the first film but are used to there full extent in this film. Some of the best music in this score is used by this.
All in all, this is a good soundtrack and stands up very well on its own and is worth checking out.
