Nice stuff.
The EP starts with a selection of clicking and some tinny, metallic sounding sounds. Tri Repetae is on the way. However, those delayed warm synths fade in. Amber isn't long gone.
This EP is perfect (along with Peel Session 1) as a bridge between Amber and Tri Repetae.
The first track alone is exactly that. A lot of the sounds are of Amber - quite subtle and easy going, but the structure and programming has more of the groove and motion of Tri Repetae. The extraodrinarily pretty synths come in around seven minutes - probably too late in the track to save it dragging a bit. It could do with being about ten minutes instead of fourteen overall. Tracks two and three (Autechre titles are hard enough to remember as it is, let alone at this length) are similar in construction: subtle yet complex beats and pleasant synths. It's only when we come to the final track that the EP suddenly becomes a classic. The first three tracks are good, but this wipes the floor with them. Eight minutes of lush synths, a painfully melancholy set of chords and melodies. No amount of words can sum up how beautiful this piece is, so I shall say no more than this track alone is worth the money. The other three being great is a bonus.
Pretty good
1. The opening track 'Garbagemx36' (14:11) is decent, but suffers from being way too repetitious. After a few minutes it becomes extremely irritating and is redeemed only at the 12 minute mark(!), when the beat stops and a beautiful synth plays out the track.
2. 'Piobmix19' (7:37) is good, but again too monotonous and feels like they kept a loop going for a few minutes while they had their lunch. Although initially intriguing, it outstays it's welcome by the end.
3. 'Bronchusevenmx24' (9:44) Much better. Very peaceful and soothing, with synths and a bubbly beat. 10 minutes long, but time well spent.
4. 'VLetrmx21' (8:27) is easily the best track on the EP. Very remeniscient of Vangelis's 'Blade Runner' soundtrack and a hauntingly beautiful piece of work. Perhaps the most moving track by Ae ever.
I disagree with other reviewers for this EP, as I found it to be Ae's weakest EP release- mainly because of the 2 opening tracks. If these tracks were halved in length, it would greatly improve the impact of this CD.
Nevertheless, this is a great EP for completists, for the fantastic 'Bronchusevenmx24' and 'vietrmx21'.
It's also great value at 40 mins.
An excellent EP for any Autechre listener
More of an EP than a CD-Single as Amazon describes it(as running just over 40mins). The four tracks here show Autechre's more orchestral stance on their 'crazy-beat antics' of their other albums. Similar to Amber in style but possibly even more ambient. The first track (around 13 minutes) in particular is an ambient/electro masterpiece starting with electic style clicks and throughout slowly evolving into an incredible acoustic string section at the end. If you are a fan of Autechres more 'musical' songs then I recommend to give Garbage a go
