Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
John Williams's heartbeat "der-dum" motif must qualify as one of the most succinctly successful pieces of composition in musical history. Endlessly parodied, it is now securely lodged in public consciousness worldwide to mean "shark!". The only shame is how overlooked the rest of the score is as a result. In what is clearly a short concert suite arrangement ("Main Title"), several of the score's subsidiary motifs are woven together nicely. So for those simply expecting 30 minutes of tightly winding underwater tension, this is a perfect reminder that there's a lot more going on here. Lest we forget, there's a sprightly jaunt depicting 1970s beach life in "Promenade", a chummy ode to camaraderie on the tossing waves in "Out To Sea", and the ethereal something's lurking effect achieved by flute and harp in "Night Search". This was in many ways the beginning of the composer's "classic" period, being closely followed by Star Wars, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind ... and so many more. --Paul Tonks

Classic Early Williams5
The 'Main Title' from John Williams' soundtrack to the film Jaws is possibly the most famously chilling underscore of all time and is captured here magnificently on CD - twice. This is possibly my only aggravation with the CD; why the producer decided he needed to head and foot the CD with exactly the same track is beyond me!
Looking beyond the main title, John Williams has composed an atmospheric score, the brilliance of which lies in its simplicity. This is raw, gritty film music which does nothing more or nothing less than it's supposed to; it adds an enormous amount of tension to the film without overshadowing it.
All the playing is spot from the stately 'Promenade' to the virtuoso strings in the 'Barrel Chase'.
This is certainly a vital part of any film music collection.
