Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
The much anticipated follow-up to Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, Magnolia features a specially orchestrated soundtrack, largely written and performed by Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday member and sadly overlooked solo artist). Mann's voice has always been a suitable vehicle for conveying emotional turmoil and indelible sadness, and several tracks here ("Build That Wall", "You Do", "Driving Sideways") do so with the rich melodicism that informs her best work. Producer Jon Brion's sprightly horn arrangements for "Momentum" are an unexpected (though not completely unwelcome) splash of cold water. Only Mann's cover of the Harry Nilsson-penned Three Dog Night hit "One" backfires, as it simply doesn't deliver the same effective climax as the original. The two Supertramp tracks from their Breakfast in America LP tacked on at album's end are incongruous; but for anyone with an interest in Mann's melodic song writing, there are eight worthy originals waiting for you. --Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews
This CD bowled me over!
I have been bowled over by this superb CD. After watching Magnolia, I sat through the credits for ages mesmerised by 'Save me' to find out who owned that voice. After picking up the CD I can't stop listening to it as well. Her crisp melodic voice does something to your heart and before you know it you're eyes are closed, your head is swinging to the rhythm and you are mouthing the words as they do in the film. the last album to move me so much as this was Air's Moon Safari. The brace of Supertramp hits at the end provide a quality companion but it is Aimee Mann you will want to hear for ever more! Can't wait for her next one.
This album changed my life.
For me, the song 'Wise Up' was life-changing. But dont get me wrong, this is an album FULL of incredible songs. From the romping irony of 'Momentum' to the love-starved desparation of 'Save Me', I found myself relating in some way to every song. These are songs that will melt you, comfort you, enlighten you. Aimee's lyrical poetry and pleasing melodies are a powerful tonic. And to think I never heard of Aimee Mann before. Buy it now and you won't regret it. Oh, and one more thing: see the film.
I could go on listening to this forever
I don't think I've ever come across an album that is to such an extent both easy-listening and deeply affecting. I'm writing a few hours after buying this and I must have listened to it at least five times through already. Whether you've seen the film or not (and I recommend you do - it's genius) this should definitely be in your collection.
