Customer Reviews
Oh dear!
Being a fan of star Trek i thought it would be a game worth buying if the reviews were anything to go by. How mistaken i was. When you first start you think wow.
That wow doesn't last long. You'll soon get confused and annoyed with nearly everything in the game.
Mission briefings are plain rubbish, with just a few hints at what you have to do and no information where you have to go.
Computer AI is almost pitying, you tell a unit to move around an object, 2 seconds later it moves and if it bumps into something while moving, it will sit there for another couple of seconds before moving around it. That delay can be so unacceptable when in battles.
No save option has to be the worst part of it. You can often spend HOURS on a level to end up failing without knowing why. The kill-all-units style missions can be unforgiving as well with how long you sometimes have to take to find that one damn unit.
Resource gathering can be excruciating. Knowing what resource amounts to what is hard enough, without having to find some PERFECTLY flat square hard ground to build the mine on and protect it with your limited population allowance, since buildings add to the total population size. To have a decent colony you have to use up 2/3 of you pop limit, which is harsh.
Then there are the bugs. One of the worst is where your units just literally shoot half way across the level and then IF you find them you'll see them moving left and right quickly underneath the ground. If can get them back somehow (I have managed to sometimes) then they are often on a mountain that they can't get off, miles away from where you need them. When it’s your main force, it can make you want to quit straight away.
There are few good things about it, graphically it is quite good and there some nice tunes and sound affects. That’s what made me warrant it 2 stars. Star Trek die-hards MIGHT want to buy this game, but everyone else, steer well clear.
It had potential
This game had the potential to be one of the great Star Trek titles, sadly it was a bit of a let down. The games biggest fault is the AI, you build a sizeable force, send them into battle, only to have them march single file into enemy lines or for half to wonder off. There is also no option to save the game mid mission, you can only save once the mission is complete, this gets annoying on some levels when you fail without knowing why, forcing you to start all over again. There isnt enough of a difference between the three sides, the units look different but they are essentially the same, though each side does have one unique vehiacle each. One thing I noticed, unlike most games of this genre there is no technology tree, you have access to all the weapons and technology on the first mission. On the plus side, the graphics are good and the sound aint bad either. This game will really only
appeal to Star Trek fans as there are better RPG games out there, still worth it if your a fan though.
Where's The Challenge?
The graphics were pretty good, but I've seen better (Armada). The computer's AI was horrible; the comp would send in around 3 ships each time and no more than 5 each time. If it attacked my Hub, I would have time to build a vehicle yard, build a fleet, and get a drink before my hub lost 50% shields. What kind of game is this??? It looked cool, but what a letdown. At first I was mad when I played the first level and I went to attack my enemies base... only 5 of my 15 ships could get through, the rest just hung back in a single file line, there was plenty of room for them to get in!!! But after I calmed down, I realised my opponent didn't even have more than 2 defence platforms and no ships! I wasted around 10 minutes building a huge fleet and planning and setting up my defences in case I lost all my ships that could defend my base, and for what? 2 defence platforms, a regular hub, no ships, a vehicle yard, a shield generator and a construction yard in my oppenents base?!? Man, what a boring game. The same basic thing every level. Dont waste your money unless you suck at strategy games. This game was no challenge and no fun.
