Amazon.co.uk Review
The first-person shooter genre has grown by intermittent leaps since the days of Wolfenstein 3-D. Huge advances in 3-D graphics, sound, and processor speed, as well as the addition of network multiplayer gameplay have favoured the genre, and now, Red Faction's "Geo Mod" technology promises to take the first-person shooter to new heights.

Geo Mod, which is short for "geometry modification," allows formerly permanent elements of a game's background to change in real-time. For example, if a player were to shoot a rocket at a stone wall, the wall could crumble or have a hole blown clean through. The best that previous games could do is to change the texture of the wall and leave it looking charred.

While most gamers would applaud any advance in realistic graphics, Geo Mod looks to also influence the way first-person shooters are played. If the world of the first-person shooter can be altered, the game makers point out, then the world itself becomes a weapon at your disposal. More than just shooting opponents through walls, players should be able to cause a ceiling to collapse on an opponent. With the right tools, players will be able to destroy bunkers, block escape routes, and otherwise flush players out of their well-defended positions.

Obviously, it's Geo Mod that has gamers so excited for this game, so other game components might be easy to overlook in the excitement. Red Faction's story is set on a Martian mining colony, where workers, buffeted by abusive guards and a deadly plague, revolt. In the single-player game, you'll run around the tunnels of Mars in a first person view and use 15 weapons to destructively deform the environment as well as your foes. You can also hijack land, sea, and air vehicles to aid your revolt. --Porter B. Hall

Manufacturer's Description
In Red Faction, you play Parker, a weary miner who works for the corrupt Ultor Corporation. You reside on Mars, sometime in the future, and when a plague spreads through the mining community, some of the Ultor employees uncover a massive conspiracy. Thus ensues a battle by a group of lowly workers, headed up by the educated Parker, to expose the deadly experiments Ultor has unleashed onto its work force.

Red Faction features an innovative piece of technology that the game's creators call 'geo-mod', short for geometrical modification. How this actually impacts on your game is truly impressive, because it lets you actually feel the effects of a range of deadly weaponry. So, if you shoot at a wall, you'll take a chunk of that wall out - the geo-mod actually changes the geometry of the wall, rather than just changing the textures. It's an awesome piece of gaming development. Are you ready to sign up to the revolution and experience it for yourself?

THE REAL RED FACTION REVIEW5
This is the game that you should all be rushing out to buy. For all them people who have dreamed about assault shotguns, heavy machine guns or just running around in a in a giant digger on an insane rampage. This is the game for you. With 15 weapons of mass destruction (ranging from your average pistol to your bloody big fire through walls rail gun), 5 mad vehicles, some superb enviroments and great voice overs. Oh, did I mention the multiplayer mode.
This game takes routes from all the great games of the past. The shooting of Quake, The stealth of Tenchu and um, the picking up of bodies from MGS2.
The game begins easy but a slender difficulty curve changes that. And just in case you find it difficult theres a brilliant training mode aswell. Not to mention 3 difficulty modes. There is also great replay value. Whatever your age (as long as you over 15) this is the game for you.

Red Faction- the way to go(?)4
This was one of the first games I bought on purchasing a PS2, and after only five minutes of play, in a word...WOW! The geo-mod technology that the game employs is ground breaking. Simply find a wall, or floor, and blow your way through to the next room, or a lower level. Unfortunately, this does not work on all walls/floors. That said, even after a month, I'm still discovering hidden areas. A vast array of weapons is provided, starting from the control baton, (which is basically like an electronic cattleprod), right through to the fusion rocket launcher, which makes Doom's BFG look like a pea-shooter! One point that I would make here. Weapon reload can take a little long. This is especially so in the case of the heavy machine gun...a real pain, when the odds get a little too overwhelming. I do however, love the rail driver, (or FCA-26, to give it it's actual title). The ability to actually see enemies through walls, doors, ceilings and floors is very useful, using, (I suppose), thermal imaging. Another very nice feature, is that most of the weapons have an alternate fire capability. You effectively get two weapons in one. The rocket launcher, for instance will fire either a single shot, every two seconds, or you can use heat seeking mode.
Even on the easiest level, this game is extremely difficult in places. The highest level, (appropriately labelled 'impossible'), is, well, impossible!
Unfrotunately, there is no default fire mode. This can be annoying, if you run out of ammo. You'll have to find some more, before re-engaging any enemies. In the level, where Parker dons the 007-style suit, this becomes particularly apparent. You only have a pistol. Without ammuntion, all you can do is run. I would have liked to see a Doom or Disruptor-style default, where at least you can use your fists, or the empty gun as a club. That would at least be something.
To sum up then. A fantastic game, and one that really does THQ credit. The only real niggles I'd have, is the aforementioned weapon reload time, and lack of a default defence mode. That said, I look forward to more releases from THQ...I really hope this is the way the shooter is going.

WOW!5
Well i'd say something but it would be foreign, it's fast it's brethtaking mindblowing anything positive it is. Halflife is better than it yeah dreamon.! every little detail is well done. One down side is that the voices are repetative and they (enemies) say things and do the exact opposite.

A thumbs up from grannie. Spend your money on amoson today to buy red faction.
