Amazon.co.uk Review
It's a good thing Sandra Bullock knows her strengths and weaknesses, because without Bullock as star and producer, Miss Congeniality would be an insufferable mess as opposed to being a mildly enjoyable trifle that is custom-made for Bullock's established screen persona. Here she plays nerdy FBI agent Gracie Hart, who is given the horrific pseudonym Gracie Lou Freebush (one example of the film's juvenile tendencies) when assigned to infiltrate a beauty pageant to investigate threats of a terrorist attack. Transforming Bullock from frumpy to stunning is a piece of cake (although she gives pageant coach Michael Caine a run for his money), so the film's premise is trivial at best. More enjoyable is her character's uncouth disdain for pageant contestants and her mistaken perception that they're all a bunch of bimbos. The film nicely charts Gracie's realisation that her pageant makeover provides a much-needed ego boost. In addition to Caine's effortless scene-stealing, pageant host William Shatner and organiser Candice Bergen are smart choices for comedic support (Shatner is a perfect Bert Parks wannabe), but the film desperately needs a credible foundation for its comedy to really pay off. None of the plotting is as smart as predecessors like Beverly Hills Cop in combining procedure with laughs. That leaves Bullock to carry the burden of a comedy that barely works in her favour. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Synopsis
When a notorious criminal mastermind known only as the Citizen threatens to terrorize the Miss United States Pageant, the FBI scours their ranks to find a female agent capable of winning the contest and capturing the killer before it's too late. Special Agent Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) may be the most physically beautiful woman in the Bureau, but her tomboyish lack of feminine grace jeopardizes the plan and spells disaster. Forced to turn to the once-proud beauty pageant consultant Victor Melling (Michael Caine), Agent Eric Matthews (Benjamin Bratt) tries to accomplish the impossible goal of transforming Hart from an unrefined rogue to a model candidate of elegance, poise, and style, with the irresistible power to win the pageant and simultaneously catch the killer. MISS CONGENIALITY combines the hilarious physical comedy and girl-next-door charm of Bullock with Caine's trademark British wit and impotent outrage, adding up to plenty of comedy, glamour, and catastrophe.
Customer Reviews
Bullock and Caine have created a classic!
When i first watched this film i was expecting a typical chick flick failure but i found it to be a hit.I loved it and i found that Michael Caine giving a usual top notch performance, but i was surprised on how well Sandra Bullock took to the role of the sleezy FBI agent. I would highly recommend this film.
Comedy, satire, and surprising insight
Anyone who has ever lived in the South, or watched "the" American beauty pageant over the decades, will be delighted to see all its sugary ambition and role-playing exposed--and surprised perhaps at the ultimate gentleness of the satire, for the women come to be regarded as individuals and as such are not ridiculed. The supporting cast of intensely committed beauty contestants, both silly and sincere, and those who manipulate them, are well chosen. Michael Caine's efforts and success in grooming the Sandra Bullock character put this film in the genre of Pygmalion, My Fair Lady, Pretty Woman, etc. It is of course Sandra Bullock's comic acting, which just gets better as the years go by, that makes this film worth seeing more than once. Highly entertaining, and highly recommended.
Top quality entertainment
I was cajoled into watching this film by a friend and I sat down to watch it expecting to be bored senseless. Inbstead I was utterly suprised and totally captivated by this gem of a film. Bullock gives one of the best performances of her career as the tomboy-ish FBI officer and she is superbly complemented by an excellent cast including Michael Caine in another of his sterling comic performances. The film has been edited to be just the right length and leaves the audience satisfied. It is a true feel-good movie and, whatever your view of beauty pageants, is an excellent piece of entertainment for both men and women.
