Amazon.co.uk Review
The pretentiously titled Existence is another two-part X-Files yarn glued together to make a feature-length episode. Here the story concerns the birth of Scully's perhaps-alien-tinged child and proves the old maxim that you should stop watching any series when the characters start having babies. By now, newbie Robert Patrick is settled into the role of Agent Doggett, Scully's new partner on the X-Files, but David Duchovny's contract negotiations have enabled Fox Mulder, no longer in the FBI, to come back and hang about the delivery, clashing and then bonding with his replacement. The action content comes from a mild-mannered alien abductee transformed into an unstoppable killing machine, ripping through everything as he tries to prevent the upcoming nativity for reasons that (as ever) don't quite become clear. Also in the support cast are semi-regular Nicholas Lea as lurking plot-explaining conspirator Alex Krycek, and the more welcome Annabeth Gish, whose interestingly spiritual Agent Monica Reyes is being worked up as a replacement for Scully when Gillian Anderson gets out of her contract. Weirdly, The X-Files is in pretty good shape for a show that's been running this long--the performances and the direction are still strong, and outside the "continuing story" shows individual episodes hold up well. But this dreary muddle of running about (plus the odd decapitation) and agonised rumination (blathery philosophical musings about the miracle of life and childbirth) does not represent the series' strengths, suggesting that the best thing that could happen would be to get shot of the long-time stars and their played-out characters to make room for a revitalised show starring Patrick and Gish.
On the DVD: The full-screen print, with the extra detail of the DVD image and Dolby Digital, allow you to pick up a lot more than from the murky telecasts. "Alex Krycek Revealed" Parts 1 and 2, a couple of character profiles, turn out to be very snippet-like Fox TV promo pieces, with some interview footage and behind-the-scenes stuff amid the usual teaser clips.--Kim Newman

Synopsis
This X-FILES collection features the thrilling final two episodes of the eighth season. In "Essence" and "Existence," Mulder (David Duchovny) and Doggett (Robert Patrick) investigate Scully's (Gillian Anderson) mysterious pregnancy. Meanwhile Reyes (Annabeth Gish) struggles to protect Scully, from looming forces that have descended on their hidden location. And to make matters worse, Krycek (Nicholas Lea) and other forbodingly familiar faces have begun to reappear.

lights, camera and lots and lots of action! :)
After the moaning and groaning of some fans before season 8, saying things like "ahhh its all over, mulders gone and the show will go bad", how wrong they were. Season 8 was (in my opinion) one of the finest seasons in the shows history, creating some wonderful new characters and brilliant episodes like (alone, per manum) and this 2 part finale entitled "existance". This is a brilliant finale with more twists and turns and some really exciting moments. My favourite scenes were between doggett and mulder as these characters are so different from one another but seem to work off eachother perfectly. The ever beautiful and brilliant Gillian Anderson turns in another fine performance, as does David Duchovny. Annabeth Gish really makes here mark in these two episodes, but i have to take my hat off to Robert Patrick who entered the lions den at the start of the season and has come up trumps, never missing a chance to shine :) ***** stars
Should have been the end of the show
Once you see these episodes, it's hard not to imagine them as the final two of the show as a whole. They symbolise everything that has made The X-Files one of the best, if not the best, shows of our time. The final scene will go down in history and it would be hard to imagine a more poignent ending for an amazing series. The chemistry between Mulder and Scully has never neeb so intense and moving. It should have been the end of the show.
Of course it isn't and Chris Carter has insisted on making another series but this video is a must for all true X-Philes and indeed anyone who recognises its true excellence. This is the ultimate X-File and for many fans will be the last true X-File. Buy it.
Just the right end scene for David Duchovny's departure
The two-part season 8 finale Essence/Existence has to be at the top of it's peak, packed full of suspense, excitement, horror, blood & gore. But never fear, there is a happy ending. Mulder moves in for the end scene to top all end scenes. Season 8 has definitely proved to us that The X-Files is still one of the world's finest TV shows. A certain must for ALL X-Files fans!!
