Amazon.co.uk Review
In the PlayStation 2's first few months there were only a few standout games; one of them, SSX, brought snowboarding to people who didn't even like snowboarding. Now, only a year later, PS2 fans get a new reason to stay indoors during the cold winter months. SSX Tricky is its name, and it more than lives up to the moniker.
SSX Tricky removes two characters from the previous game and adds five new ones and adds two new race locations--Garibaldi and Alaska--to the already beefed up World Circuit. Features have also been added to the older tracks, effectively making them new again. Tricky improves the graphics a bit and refines the controls. The game also tweaks the basic gameplay by letting you upgrade your boarder's stats in races, but also forcing you to attempt and master the show-off mode as well. And they went a long way toward improving the challenge by evening out the learning curve. The first game tended to be a cakewalk until the later races in each set; this time your rivals get more intense and aggressive depending upon the lap you're taking.
As in the first game, personality is everything--not only in terms of voice acting, but also in how you treat the other riders. The game has three basic attitudes in regard to you. If you block and attack characters too much, they'll remember it and actively seek you out. If you help one or two of them they become your allies, warning you of danger or fending off attackers.
In many ways SSX Tricky is only an upgrade to the previous game. Admittedly, what's been added doesn't look like enough to equal buying the game all over again. But these changes are deep enough to change everything, and delight even fans who are tired of, or mastered, the first game. Maybe that's the most impressive über-trick of them all. --Bob Andrews
Manufacturer's Description
Grab your board and take on the slopes of SSX as you've never seen them before. Two brand-new runs, six never-before-seen riders, and tons of original tricks, shortcuts, and jumps make SSX Tricky the ultimate snowboarding experience. With voices supplied by celebrities such as Oliver Platt and Macy Gray, the SSX Tricky riders come to life on the snow-covered icy mountain courses. Establish friendships, create rivalries, and show off your high-flying skills in three different types of races, and when you're ready to catch real air, reach into your bag and bust out one of the crazy new über-tricks that take airborne flight to the next level, with flips, twirls, and more. New Garibaldi and Alaska courses let you get more vertical and catch more air, while all the original courses have some new surprises. Six new riders join most of the original SSX crew to provide a wide range of abilities and competition.

It's Tricky!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I sometimes feel like the only person in the world not to like Tony Hawkes Skateboarding. I've tried it, played it and found little fun in it. This experience put be off this genre of game and thus I never gave Tricky a second glance. But then I bought a magazine with a demo on it. Played it and loved it. Not only that but my 'video games are boring' girlfriend also fell in love with it.
The bottom line is that this game has something that is missing from all too many video games these days - FUN.
At first you will find yourself playing the 'racing' aspect of the game. The idea is simply - race against other riders, do tricks to earn boost and use boost to finish quicker. The tricks are simple though - randomly press a few buttons and you'll soon be pulling off some killer moves.
Once you get the hang of the tricks, you'll then find yourself drawn toward the 'tricks' elements of the game. The objective here is not to finish first but to score as many points as you can for doing different tricks.
As you win more and more races, you build up the ability of your characters which give you the opportunity to do even better tricks. This in turn allows you to run up bigger and better scores.
There are a number of different racing courses to release which also adds to the longevity. Yet this is a game that anyone can easily pick up and play and even when you've completed it, you'll still play it for the laughs.
Forget the subject matter. This game is great....buy it.
A very good snowboarding game
Before this I had never played a snowboarding or skiing game of any kind, not even on the arcade. The reason I was pulled in by EA Sports Big bargain game was the price and presentation. The graphics and animation are superbly real. You cant peform superman type tricks unless you do 6 'super tricks' ensuring TRICKY is activated and then the real fun begins. And that is the key word for this game. Fun. Not realistic, but loads of different charcters, kits, boards and tracks to choose from which will ensure that you wont get bored. I have had it since June 2003 and am still playing it regularly. Enough said. A very good game indeed. However SSX3 has now been released.....
SSX Tricky - Just buy it!
SSX was the best launch title on PS2, having both substance and style. When EA Sports announced a DVD version I thought it would be the same with some added extras. Not true! SSX Tricky is more of a sequel than an expansion, something that all SSX fans like myself will appreciate. 12 boarders are on offer, including most of the original ones and featuring spot-on celebrity voiceovers: Bif Naked as Zoe? Perfect! Same deal with the music, breakbeats are much better for this than US pseudo-metal (see Shaun Palmer's Pro Snowboarder). The new Uber tricks add a "Did you see that?" factor that makes the game fun to watch as well as play! All the original courses have been given a facelift to make them fresh and challenging! There are even movie-style DVD extras: making of the game, music and voice cast, character info... everything! The final word: I think SSX Tricky is the PS2's Wipeout 2097: it should convince lots of people to buy the PS2! This is definitely the best PS2 game so far, you really HAVE to have this!
